Newcastle United Plot Goalkeeper Move as Magpies Weigh Two Top Targets in High-Stakes Transfer Battle

Newcastle United are stepping up their search for a new first-choice goalkeeper, with fresh reports suggesting the Magpies are actively exploring deals for Brighton shot-stopper Carl Rushworth and Manchester City’s James Trafford.

As Eddie Howe looks to strengthen his squad ahead of the new season, the goalkeeping position has emerged as one of the club’s biggest priorities—and a crucial transfer decision now appears to be approaching.

Newcastle Hold Talks Over Carl Rushworth Deal

According to the Mail Online, Newcastle have opened discussions with Brighton regarding a potential move for Carl Rushworth, while simultaneously maintaining contact with Manchester City over long-term target James Trafford.

The plan is straightforward: bring in a goalkeeper capable of challenging highly-rated youngster Ewen Jaouen for the No. 1 shirt and add greater competition between the posts.

Rushworth has become an increasingly attractive option after an outstanding loan spell with Coventry City, where he played a key role in their promotion to the Premier League. His performances earned widespread praise, firmly establishing him as one of the Championship’s standout goalkeepers last season.

Brighton Face a Difficult Decision

Rushworth has now returned to Brighton, but his future remains uncertain.

Coventry City have already made two unsuccessful attempts to bring him back permanently, with Brighton refusing to sanction a move so far. However, the situation is becoming increasingly complicated.

The 25-year-old enters the final year of his contract this season, leaving Brighton with a major decision. They can either hand him an opportunity to compete for the No. 1 role alongside Bart Verbruggen and Jason Steele, or cash in before risking losing him for nothing next summer.

Adding further competition is England Under-21 international James Beadle, giving Brighton plenty of depth in the goalkeeping department.

James Trafford Remains Newcastle’s Dream Signing

Despite their interest in Rushworth, Newcastle’s priority target is still James Trafford.

The Manchester City goalkeeper has been admired by the Magpies for some time, with the club believing he has the potential to become their long-term first-choice goalkeeper.

However, securing Trafford’s signature would require a significantly larger financial commitment than signing Rushworth, making negotiations considerably more challenging.

With Newcastle determined to strengthen without overspending, the club must now decide whether to push for their dream target or move quickly for the more attainable Rushworth.

A Big Decision Awaits

As the transfer window gathers momentum, Newcastle’s goalkeeping plans are becoming one of the club’s biggest storylines.

Whether the Magpies land the highly coveted James Trafford or turn to the in-form Carl Rushworth, it’s clear Eddie Howe is determined to strengthen one of the most important positions on the pitch before the new campaign begins.

With talks already underway and multiple clubs monitoring the situation, the race for Newcastle’s next goalkeeper could accelerate rapidly in the coming days.
