Historian John Hutchinson of the Leicester Fosse and Leicester City Club continues to take a look at the exceptional careers of 100 of the most notable players in the Club’s 140-year history. This installment focuses on N’Golo Kanté, recognized as one of the top midfielders of his era.
Kanté’s time at Leicester City was brief, with just one season in 2015/16, a season that saw the Foxes triumph as Premier League champions. However, his impact was profound, solidifying his status as one of the Club’s all-time greats.
Known for his tireless box-to-box style, Kanté was lauded for his energy, effective tackling, and keen tactical sense. His knack for disrupting opponents’ possession was unmatched, earning praise from those within the club, such as Steve Walsh, who praised Kanté’s midfield partnership with Danny Drinkwater.
His career began at Boulogne, where he made a mark despite the club’s relegation in 2011/12. He then spent two successful seasons at Caen, achieving promotion to Ligue 1 and establishing the club in the top flight.
Upon Walsh’s recommendation, Leicester’s new manager, Claudio Ranieri, secured Kanté’s services in 2015, a move that proved pivotal in the Foxes’ historic title win. His exceptional statistics, including the most tackles and interceptions in the Premier League, led to high praise from legendary figures like Sir Alex Ferguson.
As Leicester closed in on the title, Kanté made his international debut for France and went on to win multiple accolades for his outstanding season, including PFA Team of the Year and Leicester’s Player of the Year. His contributions to the team’s success were undeniable.
