Leeds United’s preparations for the new campaign got underway under the Florida sun, but it proved to be a testing start for Daniel Farke’s side as they fell to a dramatic 3-2 defeat against Wrexham at the Raymond James Stadium in Tampa.
While the result will ultimately matter little in the grand scheme of pre-season fitness, the fixture provided supporters with their very first glimpse of marquee summer arrival Harry Wilson in a white shirt. The Wales attacking midfielder, who completed a high-profile move to Elland Road on a free transfer following the expiration of his contract at Fulham, stepped off the bench at halftime to make his unofficial debut.
A Fast and Furious Encounter in Florida
The fixture burst into life almost immediately. Wrexham shocked the Premier League side straight from the whistle, with Kieffer Moore seizing on an opportunity to fire home a crisp left-footed shot inside the opening minute.
Leeds had a swift chance to restore parity when Dan James was brought down inside the penalty area, earning a spot-kick. However, Joel Piroe uncharacteristically failed to convert from twelve yards, letting Wrexham off the hook. The back-and-forth nature of the contest continued when Bailey Cadamarteri broke through the Leeds backline to slot home and restore Wrexham’s lead. But the Whites fought back once more before the break, with Longstaff capping off an impressive individual half by hammering home a clean right-footed strike.
Wilson’s Introduction and Late Heartbreak
At the interval, manager Daniel Farke opted to ring the changes, introducing Harry Wilson alongside other squad members to run the rule over his expanding roster. Operating in the pockets and trying to dictate play, Wilson injected fresh creative spark into the midfield.
As the second half progressed, both sides pushed for a winner in the humid conditions. Wilson himself went close in stoppage time, firing a curling effort just over the crossbar that nearly snatched a late draw for Leeds.
However, it was Wrexham who ultimately had the final say. Sam Smith—who famously netted the winner in a pre-season victory against Manchester United—popped up late in the game to clinically finish past the Leeds defense, sealing a memorable 3-2 victory for the Welsh outfit.
While the opening friendly ended in defeat, the sight of Harry Wilson integrating into the squad and getting crucial minutes under his belt offers plenty of optimism for the Leeds faithful as their pre-season tour continues.
