West Ham United’s disastrous recruitment strategy continues to haunt the club, and no player exemplifies that bitter reality more than Pablo Felipe. Arriving in a staggering £20 million deal from Gil Vicente during the January transfer window under Nuno Espirito Santo, the Brazilian striker was billed as an ambitious piece of the puzzle to beat the drop. Instead, his time in east London has turned into an unmitigated nightmare, culminating in West Ham’s painful relegation to the Championship.
Frightened into panic-buying by the looming threat of the drop at the turn of the year, the Hammers splashed a combined £47 million on Taty Castellanos and Pablo. While Castellanos managed to win over sections of the fanbase with respectable performances, the polar opposite has unfolded with his Brazilian strike partner.
A Controversial Arrival and On-Pitch Struggles
The eyebrows raised at Pablo’s £20m price tag—given he was a relative unknown outside of Portuguese football—have been fully justified by his output on the pitch. With cynics pointing out connections between Nuno and Pablo’s camp, the pressure on the 22-year-old was immense from day one.
Initially, Pablo’s tireless work rate and physical graft earned him fleeting admirers among the Hammers faithful. However, it quickly became apparent that he lacked the technical refinement and lethal edge required of a Premier League forward. He barely registered a meaningful shot on target, let alone regular goals, as West Ham suffered the ultimate consequence of poor squad planning by tumbling out of the top flight.
Pre-Season Reality Check Shatters Fan Hopes
With the new Championship campaign just two and a half weeks away and no major summer reinforcements secured yet, some optimistic supporters attempted to convince themselves that Pablo might finally come into his own against lower-tier opposition.
Those delusions, however, were given a rude awakening during pre-season. Pablo has looked utterly woeful, drawing heavy criticism from club legends. Former West Ham favorite James Collins slammed his lacklustre display in a win over Stevenage, insisting the forward “simply has to do more.”
Things went from bad to worse at Ibrox on Sunday against Rangers. Handed a dismal 3/10 rating by Hammers News, Pablo was lambsted for being far too slow and completely lacking composure when clear chances came his way—including a golden opportunity laid on a plate by Mohamadou Kante. Former striker Frank McAvennie also warned that a long, painful season looms if the club relies on such an ineffective attack.
Nuno Must Act Before It’s Too Late
The harsh, undeniable truth is that Pablo currently looks entirely unsuited for English football, let alone a team targeting an immediate return to the Premier League. West Ham will certainly not be ‘walking the Championship’—as some pundits prematurely predicted—with Pablo leading the line.
If Daniel Kretinsky, Nils Koppen, and Nuno Espirito Santo are genuinely serious about mounting a ruthless promotion charge, they must discard misplaced loyalty and replace the £20 million flop immediately.
