As Ipswich Town gears up for an exciting and long-awaited return to the Premier League, manager Gary O’Neil has delivered a transparent update on the club’s ongoing summer recruitment drive. Speaking candidly about the state of his squad following pre-season tests, O’Neil revealed that the Blues are actively looking to strengthen “every single area” of the pitch before the transfer window slams shut.
While the Suffolk club has already been exceptionally busy—bringing in a wave of fresh talent to bolster the ranks—the hard work behind the scenes is far from finished as the new campaign fast approaches.
A Busy Summer of Incomings at Portman Road
Ipswich Town has wasted no time backing their manager in the market, completing a flurry of permanent deals and high-profile arrivals. The club has added six brand-new faces to the senior squad this window:
- Emersonn: Striker signed from Toulouse for a club-record £26 million.
- Kayne Van Oevelen: Goalkeeper arriving from FC Volendam for £3.4 million.
- Abdul Fatawu: Winger snapped up from Leicester City for £20 million plus £3 million in add-ons.
- Issa Diop: Centre-back added from Fulham for £8.5 million.
- Daizen Maeda: Forward joining from Celtic for £8 million plus £2 million in add-ons.
- Kjell Scherpen: Goalkeeper arriving from Union SG for £8.5 million plus £2.5 million in add-ons.

Discussing the situation, O’Neil admitted:
“Obviously, we’re short in midfield, aren’t we? Especially with the injuries we have in there at the moment. We’ve finished the game with Chieo (Ogbene) and Charlie Compton in there… So we’re short in there at the moment.”

“Not everyone who’s here tonight is going to end up at Ipswich come the close of the window. We have too many. We’re going to add more. So there will be people that go out. That’s the nature of the business.”
