Barcelona have been chasing Salinas aggressively, but they’ve hit a wall: Racing Santander won’t budge on their valuation, and the Catalan giants aren’t willing to meet it. And now, Manchester United have entered the race too, reportedly eyeing the 19-year-old as a cut-price alternative to Newcastle’s other target, Lewis Hall.
That’s right — Newcastle aren’t just competing for Salinas, they may end up battling their Premier League rivals for two full-backs at once.
The Release Clause That’s About to Get Very Real
Here’s where it gets urgent. Salinas signed a new contract through 2029 last summer, and his value has exploded — from just €300,000 in June 2025 to an €8 million Transfermarkt valuation today. His release clause told the same story: it sat at an affordable €8 million until June 30th. It has since doubled to €16 million.
For a club with Newcastle’s financial muscle under PIF ownership, that number is loose change. Reports out of Spain go as far as suggesting triggering the clause “shouldn’t be a problem” for either Newcastle or Manchester United — meaning this transfer could move fast, and whoever blinks first could land one of Spain’s brightest young defensive talents.
Why Salinas Fits the Newcastle Project
This isn’t a scattergun approach from Newcastle. Salinas made 37 appearances for Racing Santander, 34 of them last season alone, and was a key figure in their promotion push to La Liga. He’s represented by super-agent Jorge Mendes — and reports note Manchester United’s good relationship with Mendes, a reminder that Newcastle can’t afford to sit back and assume their early interest guarantees anything.
