In a surprising mid-season move, the Boston Celtics successfully acquired Jaden Springer just before the NBA Trade Deadline buzzer sounded. The former Philadelphia 76ers first-round pick will now join the Celtics for the second half of the 2023-24 season.
Reportedly, the decision to trade for Springer was heavily influenced by Celtics assistant and former Celtics champion, Sam Cassell, who spoke highly of the young player. According to the Boston Globe’s Adam Himmelsbach via an unidentified source, both Cassell and player development coach Tyler Lashbrook, who coached Springer during his time in Philadelphia, strongly recommended the trade.
Having played under Cassell during his first two years with the Sixers, Springer is known for his energy, tenacious defense, and good size as a guard, despite averaging just four points and 0.8 steals in limited playing time. He also struggled with his three-point shooting, hitting just 21.6% of his attempts.
The Celtics’ focus on defense was clear at the deadline, as they also added Xavier Tillman to their roster. This strategic shift comes in the wake of a deal that saw multiple players leaving the Sixers, including Springer.
As for Springer, he appeared unfazed by the trade rumors, telling The Philadelphia Inquirer’s Gina Mizell that he wasn’t too worried. It seems the Sixers are also making significant changes to their roster, opening up roster spots for potential buyout acquisitions.
The decision to trade Springer to a division rival like the Celtics is intriguing, considering both teams have similar aspirations. Additionally, the Celtics’ active moves at the trade deadline left them with an open roster spot, possibly for a player from the buyout market, where names like Marcus Morris Sr., Spencer Dinwiddie, and Thaddeus Young have surfaced.
With their recent acquisitions showing a clear defensive focus, it wouldn’t be surprising if the Celtics continue to look for more defensive-minded players in the buyout market for the rest of the season.
