Sunderland Seal £25.7m Statement Signing as Dayann Methalie Jets Into Wearside

The Black Cats are about to land their man. After weeks of hard negotiating, Sunderland have got their prize target on a plane — and the North East is buzzing.

Sunderland have reached full agreement with Toulouse over a £25.7million deal for rising French star Dayann Methalie, with the 20-year-old touching down in the North East to complete his move.

A Deal Months in the Making

This one didn’t come easy. Sunderland spent much of the summer chasing Methalie, seeing multiple offers knocked back before finally striking an agreement — a mix of guaranteed fees and add-ons that landed comfortably above the £25m mark. It’s a package that shows just how far the Black Cats were willing to go to get their man over the line.

Methalie is set to become only Sunderland’s second signing of the summer, and their first involving an actual transfer fee, following Thomas Meunier’s free arrival from Lille earlier in the window.

Why Methalie Is the Missing Piece

Primarily deployed at left-back, Methalie brings far more versatility than his billing suggests — capable of playing as a left-sided centre-back, left wing-back, or even further forward as a left-sided winger. For a Sunderland side gearing up for their first European campaign in over 50 years, that kind of flexibility across multiple competitions could prove invaluable.

The timing matters too. With defensive exits leaving gaps down the left, Sunderland head coach Régis Le Bris has been crying out for reinforcements in that area — and Methalie fits the bill as a long-term solution rather than a short-term patch.

He’s also shown he can perform on the big stage already, featuring regularly in Ligue 1 last season and chipping in with goals in his final matches for Toulouse. At Under-21 level with France, he’s lined up alongside big names and marked his international debut with a two-goal haul.

The Race to Get Him Registered

There’s now a mad dash to get everything finalised. Methalie is expected to complete a medical and sign a five-year contract at the Stadium of Light, with Sunderland hoping to have him registered in time to face Ipswich Town in their Premier League opener.

If the paperwork moves quickly enough, fans could see their new arrival in action almost immediately — the kind of instant-impact scenario that turns a smart bit of business into a genuine statement signing.

What This Says About Sunderland’s Ambition

This deal is about more than one player. It’s a signal of intent from a club determined to build serious depth as they juggle Premier League football, domestic cup competitions, and a first European run in over five decades. Sunderland have been patient in the market this summer, refusing to overpay — and landing a player of Methalie’s profile at this price suggests that patience is paying off.

With the medical looming and a debut possibly just days away, this could be the signing Sunderland fans look back on as the moment their ambition became undeniable.
