The summer transfer window has delivered no shortage of high-profile drama, but Ipswich Town’s acquisition of experienced Serbian midfielder Saša Lukić for a £9 million fee from Fulham is quietly shaping up to be one of the shrewdest pieces of business of the entire window.
In his first major, exclusive interview with Kings of Anglia, Lukić sat down to discuss his transition to Portman Road, his relentless standards, and why he is ready to take on an immediate leadership role as the Blues prepare for a fiercely competitive Premier League campaign.
Setting Sky-High Standards from Day One
Even before kicking a ball in anger, Lukić has made an unforgettable impression on his new teammates. After turning 30 during Ipswich’s pre-season training camp in Germany, the midfielder was nudged to give a speech at team dinner. Instead of offering polite pleasantries, he delivered a stirring, no-nonsense promise: he will work himself to the bone for the collective cause, and he expects exactly the same level of commitment in return.
When asked if he views himself as a leader within this globally recruited, newly assembled squad, Lukić didn’t hesitate for a second.
“Yes,” Lukić says firmly. “I want to put myself inside as a leader because I’m one of the older guys in this team and I want to help them with everything. To be competitive in the Premier League, every day is very important. I have played in it for four years and seen that everything—organisation, preparation, absolutely everything—has to be right.”
Lukić brings a rare pedigree to Portman Road. Having spent six-and-a-half years in Italy with Torino (alongside a loan stint at Levante) before joining Fulham in January 2023, he became an understated engine-room linchpin under Marco Silva. With 92 Premier League appearances under his belt—having helped the Cottagers consistently finish in mid-table security—he knows precisely what it takes to survive and thrive in the English top flight.
Adapting to the Ultimate League
Reflecting on his journey from Serie A to the intensity of English football, Lukić highlighted the stark differences between the two environments.
“In my opinion, it’s impossible to compare Italy and the Premier League,” he explains. “The Premier League is so intense. Every team is a top team and every game is an open game. In Italy it’s a little bit different because it’s more tactical, everything is slow. That’s why the Premier League is the best league in the world.”
Dubbed an “absolute warrior” by Fulham supporters who coined the popular ‘Live, Laugh, Lukic’ catchphrase, the Serbian international insists that team success always comes before individual accolades. Whether he is deployed as a deep-lying number six or pushed further up as an eight, Lukić’s all-action style is built on relentless defensive cover and sharp tactical distribution.
Reunited with Diop and Chasing Big Ambitions
Lukić isn’t the only familiar face arriving from Craven Cottage this summer. He is joined at Portman Road by center-back Issa Diop, who arrived in an £8.5m deal fresh from representing Morocco at the World Cup.
“I’m happy for him because last season he didn’t play a lot when he deserved to play,” Lukić says of his former teammate. “I had a very good relationship with him at Fulham. I’m happy to be with him here and that we are fighting together.”
Addressing whether swapping an established top-flight club like Fulham for newly promoted Ipswich was a gamble, Lukić dismissed any notions of doubt, pointing to the unpredictable nature of modern football where traditional powerhouses can easily find themselves dragged into relegation dogfights.
With a four-year contract signed and a clear belief in the club’s rich history and project, Lukić is primed for a massive campaign.
“I expect. Let’s make this season special,” Lukić concludes.
With an elite winner’s mentality and a battle-tested resume, Saša Lukić might just be the exact catalyst Ipswich Town needs to establish themselves as a permanent fixture in the Premier League!
