WHERE DID IT GO WRONG? Why the San Antonio Spurs Must Share the Blame for Jeremy Sochan’s Rapid Fall from Grace!

When the San Antonio Spurs selected Jeremy Sochan ninth overall in the 2022 NBA Draft, expectations in Texas were through the roof. Fans envisioned the versatile, high-energy forward blossoming into an essential cornerstone alongside Victor Wembanyama for a future championship contender.

Instead, after three and a half tumultuous seasons, Sochan was waived by the franchise. Following a brief, quiet stint with the New York Knicks, he has now found himself fighting for his NBA survival on a training camp deal with the Portland Trail Blazers. It is a stunningly rapid fall from grace for a former lottery pick—and it raises a hard question: Where did it all go wrong?

The Infamous Point Guard Experiment

While organizations like the Spurs are widely revered for their elite player development and maximizing youth talent, San Antonio must shoulder a significant share of the blame for derailing Sochan’s trajectory.

Most notably, the coaching staff made the baffling decision to experiment with Sochan at the point guard position during his sophomore campaign. The experiment proved to be a complete disaster on the floor, effectively stunting his natural development as a forward and shattering his offensive confidence. By forcing him into a role that did not suit his skill set, the franchise inadvertently hindered his growth right when he needed stability the most.

Even after that phase passed, unfortunate timing worked against him. Just as Sochan appeared to be breaking out and finding his groove during his third season, a poorly timed injury halted his momentum entirely. Upon his return, the arrival and seamless fit of veteran Harrison Barnes alongside Wembanyama pushed Sochan down the pecking order.

Sochan’s Own Shortcomings and Shooting Struggles

Of course, San Antonio’s mismanagement isn’t the sole reason for the flameout. Sochan must also take accountability for his stagnant offensive development.

Despite spending multiple seasons in a professional system, Sochan never evolved into a reliable perimeter shooter. In today’s modern NBA, a non-spacing forward becomes a massive offensive liability. Because opposing defenses routinely sagged off him to clog the paint, it became an uphill battle for the Spurs to justify keeping him in high-leverage lineups.

The final nail in the coffin came as younger internal options, such as Julian Champagnie, seized their opportunities and blossomed into dependable role players, leaving Sochan expendable.

Can Portland Offer a Fresh Start?

The red flags weren’t just localized to San Antonio, either. Even the New York Knicks—a team desperately needing versatile frontcourt depth and defensive grit—kept Sochan glued to the bench during his brief time in the Big Apple, choosing not to deploy him in meaningful stretches.

Now, entering training camp with the Portland Trail Blazers, Sochan faces a monumental challenge to prove he still belongs in the NBA. Portland has a recent history of picking up former Spurs castaways, which could work in his favor, but breaking into a crowded rotation will require a dramatic transformation in his shooting and offensive efficiency.

Ultimately, a mix of misplaced developmental experiments by San Antonio and a failure by Sochan to expand his shooting range turned a promising lottery prospect into a journeyman fighting for a roster spot. Hopefully, the Pacific Northwest provides the clean slate he needs to finally unlock his massive physical and defensive potential!
