The San Antonio Spurs are entering a new campaign riding a wave of massive expectations, with a revamped, talent-laden roster that has many pundits projecting them as absolute favorites to reach the NBA Finals. However, while championship aspirations are soaring across the Alamo City, this roster transformation comes with an unexpected casualty: young wing Carter Bryant.
After thrusting a larger-than-expected role onto the rookie during a gritty playoff run where he showcased immense two-way potential, many Spurs fans naturally assumed Bryant had carved out a permanent, fast-tracked path to heavy minutes next season. But as training camp approaches, reality paints a very different picture.
The Tobias Harris Factor and a Crowded Depth Chart
San Antonio’s aggressive offseason moves included the veteran acquisition of Tobias Harris to lock down the power forward rotation. While Harris brings invaluable stability and veteran poise to the frontcourt, his arrival effectively closes the door on Bryant playing significant minutes at the four.
Instead, the second-year wing is being slotted further down the depth chart at the small forward spot, sitting directly behind San Antonio’s two longest-tenured stalwarts: Devin Vassell and reigning Sixth Man of the Year Keldon Johnson.
For a player entering just his second professional season, beating out entrenched, high-performing veterans for regular rotation minutes represents a monumental challenge. Vassell coming off an elite campaign—particularly shining bright under the playoff spotlight—and Johnson anchoring the second unit mean opportunities will be hard to come by.
Among the two, Johnson enters the final year of his contract without an extension, and after experiencing some struggles during the postseason, he could theoretically be the more vulnerable target. Even so, unseating a proven spark plug like Johnson will require nothing short of extraordinary effort.
What Carter Bryant Must Do to Prove His Worth
Rather than viewing this logjam as a negative, some analysts believe the Spurs’ tough-love approach is an intentional test of character. By burying Bryant in a competitive depth chart, San Antonio’s front office is actively challenging the 20-year-old to sink or swim.
To force his way into head coach Gregg Popovich’s rotation, Bryant will need to make massive strides in several key areas of his game:
- Defensive Discipline: Cutting down on careless fouls and improving on-ball positioning will be paramount for earning trust on the defensive end.
- Efficient Perimeter Shooting: Continuing to knock down catch-and-shoot threes consistently to punish opposing defenses.
- Finishing at the Rim: Translating his raw athletic flashes into efficient, reliable scoring inside the paint.
Finding a 20-year-old who can develop into a true 3-and-D wing is the holy grail of modern NBA roster building—an asset the Spurs desperately need if they want to sustain a multi-year championship window. If Bryant rises to the occasion and puts in the grueling work required this season, his ceiling remains sky-high. If he falters, however, the front office may be forced to reevaluate his long-term future in San Antonio.
