Packers Drop Major Micah Parsons Update Before Cowboys Showdown — Brian Gutekunst Reveals What Comes Next

Green Bay Packers fans have been given a major update on Micah Parsons’ recovery, and it could have huge implications for one of the most anticipated games of the 2026 NFL season.

Parsons is currently beginning the campaign on the physically unable to perform list as he continues his recovery from the torn ACL he suffered last December. But despite the setback, the superstar pass-rusher has already made his intentions perfectly clear: he wants to be back on the field when the Packers face his former team, the Dallas Cowboys, in Week 6.

That highly anticipated reunion is scheduled for October 18, and comments from Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst have now given supporters another reason to pay close attention.

While Gutekunst stopped short of guaranteeing that Parsons will play, his latest remarks suggest the Packers believe their prized defensive star has a realistic chance of being available for the showdown.

And that is potentially enormous news for Green Bay.

Parsons has already picked his target date

According to comments reported after Gutekunst spoke with reporters, the Packers have a strong indication that Parsons could be “pretty close” to returning around the time he becomes eligible to come off the PUP list.

Green Bay is understandably unwilling to rush the situation.

The franchise invested heavily in Parsons after acquiring him from Dallas in August 2025, eventually handing him a four-year contract worth $188 million, including $136 million guaranteed.

With that kind of commitment, the Packers have every reason to take a long-term view rather than gamble with their defensive superstar’s health.

Gutekunst made it clear that caution will be central to the process.

The Packers want Parsons at his best when the games matter most, rather than bringing him back prematurely simply because he is desperate to return.

That creates an intriguing situation.

Parsons desperately wants to face Dallas. Green Bay, however, has to decide whether that emotional storyline should influence its medical and football decisions.

The Cowboys reunion could be impossible to ignore

There is an obvious extra layer to Parsons’ recovery timeline.

Dallas isn’t simply another opponent.

It is the organization that drafted Parsons, developed him into one of the NFL’s most feared defensive players and eventually traded him to Green Bay following a highly publicized contract dispute.

Now Parsons could potentially return to the field against his former team wearing Packers colors.

The defensive star has reportedly been eager to get back onto the field, and there is little doubt that facing Dallas would add another level of motivation.

But Green Bay’s decision-makers aren’t thinking only about one game.

Parsons led the Packers with 12.5 sacks across just 14 appearances last season before suffering the devastating injury. His importance to the team’s defensive ambitions is therefore obvious.

The Packers need him healthy for the long haul.

Green Bay refuses to take unnecessary risks

Gutekunst’s comments underline the difficult balancing act facing the organization.

There is no question Parsons wants to return as soon as possible. But the Packers have made a massive financial and sporting investment in him, meaning they cannot afford to prioritize one high-profile matchup over his long-term availability.

The situation could become even more interesting once Parsons is permitted to begin practicing.

A new NFL rule allows teams to open a player’s practice window after the second game of the season, potentially giving Green Bay additional flexibility when managing his comeback.

That means the weeks leading up to the Dallas game could become increasingly significant.

If Parsons progresses exactly as hoped, the October 18 matchup could suddenly become one of the biggest storylines of the early NFL season.

If his recovery takes longer, however, the Packers will have to resist the temptation to accelerate the process.

All eyes now turn to the recovery

For now, Green Bay must prepare for the season without its biggest defensive weapon.

The Packers begin their campaign against the Minnesota Vikings on September 13, meaning Parsons will have to watch from the sidelines while his teammates attempt to get the season off to a winning start.

But October 18 is already looming in the background.

Parsons has made his desire known.

Gutekunst has now provided an encouraging indication that the target is not unrealistic.

Still, there is no guarantee.

And that uncertainty could make every update surrounding Parsons between now and the Cowboys game impossible for Packers fans to ignore.

The question is no longer simply whether Micah Parsons wants to face Dallas.

The real question is whether his body will allow him to do it.
