The Los Angeles Clippers may have been handed one of the most difficult situations in the NBA, but one insider believes there could be an unexpected way for the franchise to begin repairing the damage.

With the fallout from the Kawhi Leonard controversy continuing to dominate the headlines, Los Angeles is facing a dramatically different future than the one it envisioned. The punishment attached to the situation has left the Clippers with a major shortage of valuable draft capital, creating an enormous challenge for a franchise that now needs to rethink its long-term strategy.

And according to NBA insider Sam Quinn, one potential solution could involve the San Antonio Spurs.

The idea is certainly bold.

Quinn recently suggested that the Clippers could explore moving Darius Garland in exchange for De’Aaron Fox, while also receiving a future first-round pick from San Antonio.

At first glance, the proposal sounds difficult to imagine. Why would the Clippers willingly move a talented point guard such as Garland? And, perhaps even more importantly, would the Spurs really be prepared to give up Fox while attaching a first-round selection?

Under Quinn’s scenario, the Clippers would receive De’Aaron Fox and a 2029 first-round pick, while the Spurs would acquire Darius Garland.

It would be the kind of deal capable of reshaping both teams almost immediately.

For Los Angeles, the obvious attraction isn’t simply Fox. The additional first-round pick could prove extremely valuable given the Clippers’ current draft situation.

The franchise has reportedly lost five first-round selections as part of the league’s punishment, meaning every opportunity to replenish its draft cupboard could become significantly more important.

Fox would also give the Clippers an explosive lead guard capable of pushing the pace, attacking the rim and creating pressure on opposing defenses.

The 28-year-old averaged 18.6 points, 3.8 rebounds and 6.2 assists last season while shooting 48.6 percent from the field. His elite speed could provide Los Angeles with another dimension, particularly alongside Brandon Ingram and the team’s collection of perimeter scorers.

It may not instantly turn the Clippers into championship contenders, but it could make the team considerably more dangerous and entertaining.

Why would San Antonio even consider it?

This is where the proposal becomes especially intriguing.

The Spurs are building around Victor Wembanyama and have assembled a young core that many believe could eventually compete for the NBA championship.

But their backcourt situation could become increasingly complicated.

If San Antonio believes Garland is a better stylistic fit next to Wembanyama, moving Fox could potentially make sense despite his obvious talent.

Garland averaged 18.8 points and 6.7 assists last season while shooting 46 percent from the field and an impressive 39.6 percent from three-point range.

The money also makes the idea possible

One of the biggest reasons the proposal deserves consideration is that the financial side isn’t completely unrealistic.

Garland’s reported $42.1 million cap hit is lower than Fox’s $49.4 million figure, meaning San Antonio could actually reduce its salary obligations by approximately $7.3 million through the swap.

For the Clippers, absorbing Fox’s larger contract could become more manageable depending on what happens with Leonard and the team’s other transactions.

That makes this more than a simple fantasy trade.

There is a financial pathway for both franchises to make it work.

Could Fox actually thrive in Los Angeles?

The Clippers would obviously need to look beyond the draft pick.

Fox could potentially become one of the most important players on their roster.

His greatest strength is his ability to attack defenses with speed. Put him alongside a scorer such as Ingram and surround them with reliable shooters and athletic players, and Los Angeles could create an offense that is far more dynamic.

The Clippers may not be ready to challenge the NBA’s elite immediately, particularly after everything surrounding the Leonard situation, but adding Fox could give them a legitimate building block while they navigate the next stage of the franchise.

There is also the possibility that Los Angeles eventually chooses to move other veterans as part of a broader rebuild.
