His immense bond with the club extended far beyond his playing days, returning later as a goalkeeping coach and remaining an integral part of the West Ham family. Tributes have poured in from across the globe, with Premier League giants Arsenal, Blackburn Rovers, legendary compatriot Petr Čech, and former teammate Tomáš Řepka leading the emotional farewells.
A Legacy Stretched Beyond East London
Mikloško’s impact on English football is etched into history. While he is immortalized in West Ham folklore, his legendary heroic display against Manchester United in 1995 famously helped deny Sir Alex Ferguson’s side the Premier League title while handing Blackburn Rovers their first league crown in over eight decades. Recognizing that historic contribution, Blackburn joined Arsenal in sending formal condolences.
“Everyone at Arsenal sends their sincere condolences at the passing of Ludek Miklosko. May he rest in peace,” the Gunners shared on social media.
Blackburn echoed that sentiment, stating: “Everyone at Blackburn Rovers sends our sincere condolences. Rest in Peace, Luděk.”
Before his passing, Mikloško’s family revealed that the unwavering love and famous chants from West Ham supporters provided him with immense comfort and strength during his illness. Petr Čech and Tomáš Řepka Pay Emotional Tributes
Fellow Czech goalkeeping great Petr Čech credited Mikloško with blazing the trail for all Czech shot-stoppers arriving in the Premier League.
“Today is a very sad day as football lost a goalkeeping legend, brilliant man, one of the nicest people in football,” Čech wrote on Instagram. “We spent time talking about Premier League and English football when I came to Chelsea and his insight helped me to understand what was awaiting—I used it well! He will be missed but his legacy will live forever and as a Czech goalkeeper I am grateful to Ludo as he opened the door for us goalkeepers to the Premier League. R.I.P. legend.”
An equally moving tribute came from former uncompromising West Ham defender Tomáš Řepka, who admitted his compatriot’s passing hit him hard.
“Today, Ludo Mikloško passed away. This really hit me,” Řepka shared. “He was one of the few people I had so much respect and admiration for. He helped me through my five years at West Ham. He explained everything to me, guided me and always tried to make me a better footballer.”
