While new additions and defensive stalwarts have largely propelled Daniel Farke’s side forward, not everyone is enjoying the early-season optimism at Elland Road.
As the January transfer window steadily approaches, a looming cloud of uncertainty surrounds several fringe players. Among them, a £15 million midfield investment now faces a shock exit after finding himself frozen out of Farke’s tactical plans.
From First-Team Staple to Forgotten Man: The Sean Longstaff Dilemma
When Sean Longstaff arrived in West Yorkshire amid considerable fanfare last year, the club believed they had secured a Premier League-proven operator for a bargain fee.
Initially, that belief looked entirely justified. Longstaff hit the ground running, setting the pitch on fire during the first few months of the 2025-26 season and locking down a permanent spot on Farke’s team sheet. However, a untimely injury derailed his momentum.
By the time the midfielder recovered full fitness, the team had successfully adapted to a new tactical system, stringing together impressive performances without him. Longstaff struggled to reclaim his spot in the starting XI.
Though a strong pre-season over the summer sparked hopes of a clean slate, reality has bitten hard. Longstaff has managed a paltry two substitute appearances in the Premier League so far, accumulating a meager 10 minutes of top-flight action. While he did earn starts in both of Leeds’ EFL Cup fixtures, an alarming performance during the cup clash against Chelsea effectively slammed the door shut on any immediate return to Farke’s preferred lineup.
Intensifying Competition and a Potential January Sale
Longstaff’s struggles are compounded by an increasingly congested midfield. Daniel Farke’s active pursuit of Shea Charles over the summer signaled a clear desire to upgrade the center of the park, and with at least three midfielders currently ahead of him in the pecking order, regular minutes look virtually impossible to come by.
To make matters worse for the former Newcastle man, competition is only set to stiffen. Ilia Gruev is steadily working his way back to full match fitness following recent outings with the Under-21 side, adding yet another hurdle for Longstaff to clear.
Given his pedigree and ambitions, remaining a bit-part bench warmer is unlikely to appeal to the 28-year-old midfielder. Sources suggest that if Longstaff continues to languish on the sidelines, a winter departure in search of guaranteed first-team football becomes a very realistic possibility.
While Leeds are unlikely to actively force him out without securing a capable replacement first, the club will certainly listen to offers when the January window opens. For a £15 million signing who once looked central to Farke’s vision, a shock mid-season parting of ways is rapidly transitioning from a hypothetical whisper into a genuine Elland Road reality.
