Leeds United has enjoyed a stellar return to the Premier League, collecting nine points from their opening five matches and maintaining an impressive unbeaten streak. New arrivals like Tarik Muharemovic, Nico Elvedi, and goalkeeper James Trafford have seamlessly integrated, instantly tightening the backline and providing a sturdy foundation under manager Daniel Farke.
However, despite the positive momentum on the pitch, not every summer addition is making the desired splash. In fact, a high-profile deadline-day agreement is already facing serious turbulence, with questions mounting over whether a permanent £20 million transfer will actually materialize.
The Jean-Matteo Bahoya Conundrum
On the frantic final day of the summer transfer window, Leeds secured winger Jean-Matteo Bahoya on loan from Eintracht Frankfurt. The deal included a conditional clause that would obligate the Whites to buy the youngster permanently for £20 million if certain appearance and performance milestones are met.
Fast forward a few weeks, and that future obligation is looking increasingly precarious. Bahoya has been entirely a peripheral figure, logging just a brief substitute appearance totalling a couple of minutes against Crystal Palace.
According to former Premier League scout Mick Brown, speaking to Football Insider, Farke has simply not been convinced by what he has witnessed from the young Frenchman during training sessions.
“The thing is, Daniel Farke has seen him in training every day, and he’ll be looking at the way he trains, how hard he works, how he performs, and questioning whether he’s ready to start,” Brown explained. “It seems he hasn’t been impressed by what he’s seen, so he doesn’t have the confidence to include him when it comes to a matchday. Farke wants Bahoya to make up his mind for him; he needs to show him enough in training that it makes it impossible for him to leave him out, and he’s not doing that at the moment.”
A Steep Mountain to Climb
Breaking into Farke’s starting XI is no easy task, particularly given the German manager’s well-documented preference for tactical stability and loyalty to trusted performers. As things stand, established options like Noah Okafor, Brenden Aaronson, and summer arrival Harry Wilson are firmly ahead of Bahoya in the pecking order.
Compounding the issue is Leeds’ current fixture schedule. Having already exited domestic cup competitions until January, opportunities for fringe players to earn valuable minutes in competitive matches are severely limited. That leaves the training ground at Thorp Arch as Bahoya’s primary stage to prove his worth.
Will Leeds Trigger the £20 Million Clause?
The math for the Leeds front office is relatively straightforward. For the club to justify splashing £20 million on a permanent transfer, the player must actively contribute on the pitch and meet the targets outlined in the loan agreement.
If Bahoya remains glued to the bench and fails to convince Farke of his readiness during training ground sessions, the Whites will almost certainly avoid triggering the purchase clause, sending the winger back to Frankfurt when his loan expires.
For now, the ball is firmly in Bahoya’s court. During the ongoing international break, the young attacker must step up his intensity, adapt to Farke’s rigorous demands, and prove he belongs in the Premier League. Otherwise, a promising deadline-day gamble risks turning into one of the most short-lived experiments of the season.
