Injury Crisis Deepens: Dallas Cowboys Face Searing Battle of Texas Prep Without Key Stars

The NFL is a relentless war of attrition, and while every franchise deals with bumps and bruises throughout an 17-game grind, the Dallas Cowboys are currently navigating a brutal medical crisis. Sitting at 1-2 after a heartbreaking near-miss against the New York Giants in Week 1 and a frustrating slip-up against the Baltimore Ravens, nobody in the league is handing out sympathy to America’s Team.

Yet, as the Cowboys gear up for a high-stakes, cross-state showdown against the Houston Texans, the team is dangerously close to rebranding as a walking hospital ward—particularly within a heavily depleted secondary.

With vital contributors battling everything from fractured bones to soft-tissue strains, the injury report heading into Week 4 presents a massive hurdle for Brian Schottenheimer’s squad. Here is the latest breakdown on Malik Hooker, DeMarvion Overshown, Shavon Revel, and the wave of roster changes shaking up Dallas.

Malik Hooker Returns to Practice in Arm Bracing

In a rare piece of positive news for a beleaguered defensive backfield, veteran safety Malik Hooker returned to the practice field on Wednesday. It marks his first appearance since suffering a fractured forearm back in Week 1.

The veteran defender underwent surgery following the injury and was given a multi-week recovery timeline, which kept him sidelined and forced him to miss the team’s international trip to Brazil. On Wednesday, Hooker was spotted practicing with added protective gear around his arm—a standard precaution for players returning from upper-extremity fractures.

As long as Hooker moves smoothly through the remainder of the week and suffers no setbacks, he appears firmly on track to reclaim his starting spot on Sunday. His return cannot come soon enough for a safety room that is suddenly scraping the bottom of its depth chart.

DeMarvion Overshown Trending Toward Another Absence

While Hooker inches closer to a game-day appearance, linebacker DeMarvion Overshown is facing a steeper uphill battle to get healthy. Dealing with a troublesome hamstring strain, Overshown was limited to working exclusively with the rehab group during Wednesday’s session.

While offensive coordinator and staff figures expressed general satisfaction with his overall recovery trajectory, Schottenheimer noted that Hooker is significantly “closer” to game action than the fourth-year linebacker.

Overshown will need to string together at least a limited practice session by Friday to realistically throw his hat in the ring for the Texans matchup. If he is ultimately forced to sit out, the defensive burden will fall on Jaishawn Barham and Dee Winters to shoulder the bulk of the linebacker snaps. With Barham showing explosive upward momentum, a strong performance could even force a permanent shift in the starting pecking order once Overshown is fully cleared.

Shavon Revel and the Secondary Shakes

Adding to the defensive chaos, second-year cornerback Shavon Revel is managing a complicated recovery after suffering an awkward fall in the closing stages of Sunday’s clash in Rio. Landing awkwardly after pushing a Ravens ball carrier out of bounds, Revel hyperextended his right knee.

While initial fears of a catastrophic ligament tear were thankfully avoided—especially given his history of lingering knee issues as a rookie—Schottenheimer revealed that Revel is currently nursing a combination of both knee and ankle ailments.

Revel admitted to reporters that he is “not feeling 100%” and will have to test his mobility as the week progresses. Despite practicing in a limited capacity initially, ESPN’s Todd Archer reported that Revel struggled with fluid movement and ultimately ended up a Did Not Participate (DNP) on the official injury report, leaving his status for Sunday deeply in doubt.

Heavy Losses: Thompson and Bullard Head to IR

Compounding the practice-field absences, the Cowboys were forced to make sweeping roster adjustments on Wednesday, officially placing safety Jalen Thompson (hamstring) and defensive lineman Jonathan Bullard (calf) on Injured Reserve/Designated to Return.

Both players went down during Sunday’s loss to Baltimore and are required to miss a mandatory minimum of four weeks. The loss of Thompson is particularly staggering; prior to his injury, he had logged 167 defensive snaps—the third-most on the entire team behind only DaRon Bland and Caleb Downs. With P.J. Locke already sidelined, Dallas’ safety depth will rely heavily on Alijah Clark and Markquese Bell stepping into prominent roles alongside a returning Hooker.

Meanwhile, Bullard’s absence stings just as much in the trenches. Emerging as a vital run-stopping anchor—highlighted by his crucial stop against Derrick Henry last weekend—his lost production will force fourth-round draft pick LT Overton into an immediate trial by fire.

The silver lining? Strong recent performances from Quinnen Williams, Kenny Clark, and Otito Ogbonnia provide a foundational safety net. But as the Cowboys march into a hostile showdown with the Texans, their depth, resilience, and adaptability will be tested to the absolute limit.

Do you think the heavily depleted Dallas Cowboys defense can weather the storm and pull off a win against the Houston Texans this weekend?
