“Like Two New Signings”: How Leon Goretzka and Brian Madjo Are Set to Transform Unai Emery’s Aston Villa

Aston Villa’s slow start to the 2026–27 Premier League campaign took another frustrating turn over the weekend following a pulse-pounding 2-2 draw against Brentford at Villa Park. Unai Emery’s side found themselves pegged back once again in a chaotic encounter—leaving the Villans with just one victory from their opening six domestic fixtures as defensive frailties continue to haunt the West Midlands outfit.

After Yehor Yarmoliuk put the Bees ahead, summer arrival Nicolas Jackson equalized for Villa. Captain John McGinn looked to have snatched a thrilling victory with a 77th-minute strike, only for Kristoffer Ajer to level the scores just two minutes later.

However, despite the defensive headaches, help is officially on the horizon. According to former senior Aston Villa scout Bryan King, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Emery is set to receive a massive double injury boost that will feel “like two new signings.”

A High-Stakes Double Boost Ahead of European Clashes

With Villa preparing to host Fenerbahçe in a crucial Champions League showdown on Wednesday before traveling to St James’ Park to face Newcastle United on Saturday, Emery’s squad depth is about to be completely transformed.

Both Leon Goretzka and teenage sensation Brian Madjo officially joined the club during the summer transfer window but have been sidelined with frustrating injuries. Madjo managed a tantalizing cameo earlier in the campaign—announcing himself on the big stage by scoring his debut goal against Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup—while Goretzka has been nursing a persistent left knee issue.

Now, both stars are nearing full fitness, offering Emery two radically different weapons to solve his early-season tactical riddles.

Experience Meets Youthful Power

Speaking to Football Insider, Bryan King highlighted how the simultaneous return of a battle-tested international veteran and a high-upside young forward will give Villa an entirely new dynamic:

”He’s [Goretzka] had this knee problem. Left knee problem, of course, he’s hoping to get himself back in the next week,” King exclusively revealed.

”It’ll be interesting to see if he does get back, because anybody of that experience will be a positive. It’s funny how you’ve got somebody with that experience and the young boy, the young centre-forward, they could both be a big plus for Villa. It’s like two new signings.”

Goretzka, a seven-time Bundesliga champion, brings elite midfield composure, physical presence, and deep European pedigree to a Villa engine room that struggled for control late against Brentford. Meanwhile, Madjo provides explosive athleticism, raw power, and clinical finishing off the bench or alongside Jackson.

Reinventing the Bench Strategy

During Saturday’s draw, when Emery searched for game-changing options on his bench to alter the momentum, his choices were severely restricted. He turned to youngsters Ibrahim Mbaye and Alysson for attacking spark, while veteran Ross Barkley was the sole midfield option available to replace João Gomes.

Injecting Goretzka and Madjo back into the matchday squad provides Emery with the kind of tactical versatility reserved for Europe’s elite. As Villa prepare for a grueling schedule across domestic and continental fronts, the return of these two key figures could be the exact catalyst needed to kickstart their season.
