Former West Ham United center-back Jean-Clair Todibo has seen his dream return to French football turn into an immediate nightmare, with local media and fans branding the 26-year-old a “complete disaster” just two matches into his RC Lens career.
Following two miserable, controversy-plagued seasons at the London Stadium, Todibo forced his way out of East London during the summer deadline day window, refusing to drop down to the Championship or feature in pre-season under manager Nuno Espírito Santo.
However, any hopes of revitalizing his career in Ligue 1 have spectacularly collapsed.
Having played just 80 out of a possible 540 minutes since his arrival in Artois, the former Barcelona defender is already facing fierce backlash from French media outlets and Lens supporters over his atrocious match fitness, poor performances, and ongoing injury struggles.
”A Complete Enigma”: French Press Torches Todibo After Dreadful Start
Todibo arrived at RC Lens with massive expectations, brought in to serve as the undisputed leader of a defensive line preparing for Champions League football following last season’s runner-up finish.
Instead, his second appearance—a disastrous performance in a 2-1 defeat to Monaco—saw him handed a brutal 3/10 match rating by Get France Football News.
The criticism escalated further this week, with prominent outlet Allez Lens launching a scathing attack on the defender’s physical condition and attitude:
“He was supposed to be the undisputed leader of Lens’ defence, the saviour capable of guiding the young Lens players through the Champions League. A month and a half after his sensational arrival, Jean-Clair Todibo has become a complete enigma.
“Without a proper pre-season with West Ham, the 26-year-old arrived in Artois out of shape. Faced with his inability to handle the intense demands of Ligue 1 and European competition, the coaching staff reportedly put him on a drastic fitness program.”
Self-Inflicted Downfall: Refusing Nuno’s Pre-Season Strategy
West Ham supporters will feel little sympathy for Todibo’s current predicament.
During his final months in London, Todibo’s unprofessional conduct sparked outrage—most notably when he stormed down the tunnel at St James’ Park without shaking manager Nuno Espírito Santo’s hand before refusing to play in any non-competitive pre-season fixtures.
Because he voluntarily froze himself out at West Ham, Todibo joined Lens completely undercooked and lacking match sharpness.
New Lens head coach Yann Cahuzac—who stepped in after Dino Toppmöller’s shock departure—confirmed that Todibo has been sidelined by a fresh injury suffered during the international break:
“‘JC’ had a minor issue during the break. He’s on a personalised fitness program. He’s been training with the group for almost a week now, so he’s really getting back into form.”
Patience Already Running Out at Lens
While Cahuzac remains publicly supportive, patience is rapidly wearing thin across Artois ahead of Lens’ weekend clash against ESTAC Troyes.
Todibo’s inability to impact the pitch has raised serious structural questions regarding Lens’ recruitment strategy, leaving the French club trapped with an expensive, out-of-shape defender whose excuses are wearing as thin in Ligue 1 as they did in the Premier League.
