Ex-Leicester City midfielder, Gary McAllister, has faith that the Foxes can surpass Reading’s record of 106 points in the Championship. The crucial matchup against Enzo Maresca’s Leeds United on Friday night at Elland Road could see the Whites closing the gap to just six points from Leicester as they aim for automatic promotion back to the Premier League.
Leicester have had a strong campaign so far with 78 points after 33 matches, but their recent 2-1 loss to Middlesbrough has given Leeds an opportunity to catch up, especially after their win against Plymouth. McAllister still believes that his former club has what it takes to break the Championship points record, as he had seen their potential during a pre-season game against Liverpool.
“I think that’s a realistic goal for Leicester City, [the points record] without a doubt,” McAllister told Betway. “They should have promotion secured by March or early April and then can focus on breaking the points record.”
The former midfielder also expressed confidence in the promoted teams from the Premier League’s last season, speculating that the three relegated teams will make a return to the top flight. He highlighted Leeds’ scoring abilities and the impact of players like Glen Kamara and Ampadu.
McAllister concluded by suggesting that next year’s Premier League will be tougher for the bottom half, as Leicester and potentially both Leeds and Southampton are “Premier League ready.” He expressed concern for teams like Crystal Palace, Wolves, and Nottingham Forest looking ahead.
