While the recruitment of senior players shows promise, the remarkable achievements of the academy’s development squad, led by Wayne Burnett, cannot be overlooked. The team is currently at the top of the Premier League 2 and remains undefeated after 12 matches.
The progress made at the youth level is undeniable, and the club’s structured development system appears to be consistently effective. While some young players have risen to prominence, others, like Josh Onomah, have failed to reach their potential.
Once considered a promising prospect, attacking midfielder Onomah made his Premier League debut at 18 under Mauricio Pochettino. Despite showing flashes of brilliance and technical skill, he made just 32 appearances for Tottenham before being sold to Fulham as part of a £25m deal.
Although Onomah found success on loan with Aston Villa, his career with Fulham was unremarkable, and his short-term move to Preston North End did not yield significant results. Currently without a club, Onomah’s future in the professional game remains uncertain.
While potential opportunities may still arise, Onomah will need to find a new platform soon if he hopes to revive his career in football.
