Graeme Bailey has stated that David Moyes will need to secure a Europa League victory in order to have any hope of extending his contract at West Ham. Before the thrashing by Arsenal, Moyes’ potential new contract was deemed to be far from close and is now on hold. It is anticipated that the club will make their stance clear after the European campaign.
As per Bailey, chairman David Sullivan is not content with the club’s extensive off-field issues. Their recruitment of technical director Tim Steidten has caused further tension, as Moyes does not want to collaborate with him. Bailey predicts that at least one, if not both, of Steidten and Moyes will not be at West Ham next season.
It is evident that there is a lack of harmony between Moyes and Steidten. Sullivan should have been aware of the potential issues arising from this arrangement, given his familiarity with Moyes. The situation gives the impression that Steidten was brought in to usher in a new era at the London Stadium, only for Moyes to prolong his tenure after winning the Europa Conference League.
Despite a recent run of poor form, West Ham’s position in the Premier League table remains relatively stable. However, the underlying tensions and issues are unsustainable in the long term. It appears that Steidten is keeping his options open in case Sullivan does not support him.
