“They criticised me a lot” – Tottenham defender ignores critics

Emerson Royal, the right-back for Tottenham Hotspur, has expressed his indifference towards the criticism he has received from outsiders of the club. During the beginning of the previous season, Emerson faced a challenging period where he was heavily scrutinized by Tottenham supporters, pundits, former players, and the media.

Despite this, the 24-year-old managed to end the season with two goals and an assist from 36 games. He did, however, lose his starting position under Cristian Stellini’s short-term tenure at Tottenham.

When asked about his turnaround last season, the Brazilian international stated that he does not ignore the criticism, but it does not affect him greatly. He emphasized his self-confidence and belief in his abilities. Emerson highlighted that those who criticize him have no knowledge of his daily training routines and the work he puts in at home. He maintains a strong understanding of himself and refuses to let external opinions impact his performance.

He admitted that it was impossible to escape the criticism, as it was everywhere – on social media and even in the stadium. However, he used it as motivation to prove his potential. Emerson believes that in such situations, one can either become a victim or take control and turn things around. He has always chosen the latter option.

This season, Emerson has made eight appearances for Tottenham, but he has only been given one league start in their opening game against Brentford in August. Despite this limited playing time, Pedro Porro has been preferred by manager Ange Postecoglou on the right side of defense.

Regarding the competition with Porro, Emerson sees it as a healthy and professional rivalry. He assured that he remains strong even when not in the starting lineup and can always be relied upon by the coach when needed. Emerson holds the ambition to regain his starting position and help Tottenham maintain their position at the top of the table. He believes that this season presents a great opportunity for them to compete for the title.
