Madden took to social media before the announcement, stating that no matter who was chosen, it would “break” the internet.
After announcing Beaton as the selected referee, Madden had previously conducted a poll for football fans to vote on their prediction for the head official of the match. With his experience officiating derby day matches, Madden knew that the likes of Nick Walsh and Don Robertson were not available, as they had already refereed one Glasgow derby this season.
