Young members of Leicester City’s Academy recently took part in a special remembrance activity in Seagrave, expanding their knowledge of football history, focusing on former footballer Walter Tull and the Windrush War effort.
As the nation prepares to honor service men and women past and present, the Club’s Academy has worked to educate and inform its young members. This year’s Truce Project, in partnership with the Premier League, centered around Walter Tull and the Windrush War effort, aiming to teach the children about these important parts of British history.
To further engage the Academy members in the project, a creative writing exercise was incorporated, including a visit from musician Courtney Burke to provide writing tips. The younger players were also encouraged to create poems, mirroring a skill often used during both World Wars.
The poems, stained with tea to add authenticity, were then shared with staff and older players in the Academy. Additionally, the Club utilized local contacts to involve the community, with representatives from Caribbean Court in Leicester attending the readings to show their support.
Jay Groocock, Head of Education at Leicester City’s Academy, emphasized the value of this immersive learning experience, stating that education is not just about academia, but also about other aspects of life that contribute to the development of the players as individuals. He praised the efforts of those involved in organizing the workshops and the dedication of the young players, acknowledging their great effort in making the project a success.
