Celtic’s Matt O’Riley had an exceptional season, scoring 19 goals and providing 18 assists in 49 games for Brendan Rodgers’ team. While his performance caught the eye of Atletico Madrid and other clubs, it wasn’t enough to secure a spot in Denmark’s squad for the Euros this summer.
Danish journalist Jesper Engmann delved into Kasper Hjulmand’s decision to leave O’Riley out of the squad in his column for Jyllands-Posten. Despite O’Riley’s impressive form for Celtic, Hjulmand opted for more experienced midfielders like Christian Eriksen and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.
While O’Riley’s exclusion may have disappointed some Danish media and fans, Engmann believes the overall quality of the Scottish league is lower than the Danish league. He recognizes O’Riley’s talent but points out that the selected midfielders for the Euros are playing at a higher level.
Despite this setback, Engmann is optimistic about O’Riley’s future with the Danish national team and believes he has the potential to become a regular fixture.
