Any Everton fans who had the courage to watch that 3-0 preseason defeat at Coventry City probably didn’t feel too great about Sean Dyche’s options on either end of the field.
Ellis Simms, the former Toffees young talent who seems to be scoring for fun in 2024, opened the scoring. Of course, he did.
Dyche must envy having a center-forward as confident and reliable as Simms. Everton’s finishing in that loss to Coventry was a lesson in how not to put the ball in the net.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin has struggled in preseason since those links to Newcastle. He missed another one-on-one against the FA Cup semi-finalists. Summer signing Iliman Ndiaye and the wasteful Beto missed clear chances by miles.
Nevertheless, Everton’s recent performances have given some cause for hope. Calvert-Lewin scored a penalty against Preston, while Beto and Neal Maupay both scored but they’re hardly a striking fear into the hearts of opposition defense.
With an opportunity looming in Italy, will Everton be tempted to make a move?
Last July, the Almeria CEO confirmed that Everton had shown interest in El Bilal Toure after his impressive season in La Liga. Toure eventually moved to Atalanta but had a difficult first season due to injury, and now desires a move away.
Fulham has shown interest in the forward, and Everton has already made some signings and cleared out some players, leaving room in the budget for a potential move for Toure. Another striker may be needed for the squad, given the circumstances of their current forwards.
