Newcastle United have reportedly come to an agreement to bring in a new sporting director to replace Paul Mitchell.
Mitchell left the team at the beginning of the summer transfer window after less than a year in the position.
During Mitchell’s absence, Newcastle made significant signings such as Anthony Elanga, Aaron Ramsdale, Malick Thiaw, Jacob Ramsey, Nick Woltemade, and Yoane Wissa, along with receiving a record-breaking fee for Alexander Isak.
It has been reported by The Gazette that Ross Wilson is set to be appointed as the new sporting director for Newcastle, taking over from Mitchell.
Wilson, currently the sporting director at Nottingham Forest, has experience with similar roles at clubs like Rangers, Southampton, and Huddersfield Town. His move to Newcastle is said to be in advanced talks.
The anticipated appointment of Wilson comes after the recent arrival of David Hopkinson as CEO of Newcastle, stepping in for Darren Eales. Wilson will be the third sporting director for the club in as many years, following Mitchell and Dan Ashworth.
Wilson’s departure from Forest comes amid changes at the club, including the departure of Nuno Espirito Santo and the hiring of Ange Postecoglou as head coach.
With Eddie Howe as head coach, Newcastle will now have their third sporting director during his time at the club. Howe has emphasized the importance of the role for the club, despite operating without a sporting director during previous transfer windows.
