Champions League Ambition: Aston Villa Move to Secure Inter Star and Ballon d’Or Nominee Denzel Dumfries

Unai Emery’s Aston Villa are reportedly intensifying their pursuit of Inter Milan wing-back Denzel Dumfries, as the club looks to bolster its squad ahead of a near-certain return to Europe’s elite competition. The Netherlands international, who has established himself as one of the most consistent performers in Serie A, is said to be available for a bargain fee this summer due to a specific release clause.

Despite Inter’s efforts to tie the defender down to a new long-term deal at the San Siro, Villa are positioning themselves to trigger a €25m (£22m) release clause. For a player of Dumfries’ experience and pedigree, the fee is being viewed by recruitment experts as a potential steal in the current market.

A “Colossal” Presence for the Big Occasion

The interest comes at a time when Aston Villa are on the verge of securing a top-five finish in the Premier League. Following a dramatic 4-3 victory over Sunderland on Sunday, Emery’s side moved ten points clear of sixth-place Chelsea. With Champions League football beckoning, the need for battle-hardened veterans is paramount.

Dumfries fits the bill perfectly. He played a pivotal role in Inter Milan’s run to the 2025 Champions League final, earning the label of “colossal” for his defensive displays against European heavyweights like Barcelona. Across 47 appearances in the competition, he has recorded five goals and five assists—a remarkable return for a defensive-minded player.

The Man Who Finished Above Haaland

The 2024/25 campaign was a career-defining period for the Dutchman. His contributions to Inter’s domestic and European success earned him a nomination for the 2025 Ballon d’Or, where he finished 25th in the world rankings.

In a surprising turn of events, Dumfries actually finished a spot higher than Manchester City’s Erling Haaland. Reflecting on the achievement, the defender said:

”It was an honour to be listed among the top 30 players in the world. I had a really good suit on, got a lot of compliments. And hey, I even finished a spot above Haaland.”

On the Brink of Serie A Glory

While Villa circle, Dumfries remains focused on delivering a league title to the black-and-blue half of Milan. Inter sit 12 points clear of rivals AC Milan with only five games remaining. Since returning from injury in March, Dumfries has been in scintillating form, recently bagging a brace in a 4-3 win over Como and providing a vital assist in the 3-0 victory against Cagliari.

For Unai Emery, signing a player currently operating at the peak of a potential title-winning season would represent a major statement of intent. As Villa prepare for their own European adventure, bringing in a Ballon d’Or nominee for just £22m could be the deal that defines their summer window.
