Sunderland midfielder Enzo Le Fée issued a heartfelt apology to supporters after a crushing 5-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest, admitting the performance fell far below the standards expected at the Stadium of Light.
Forest produced a dominant and clinical display on Wearside, effectively ending the contest before half-time as Sunderland endured one of their most damaging defeats of the season.
Le Fée did not attempt to hide his frustration or disappointment after the final whistle, taking responsibility on behalf of the squad.
“You cannot say something, but just sorry,” he said. “Because it wasn’t us today. It wasn’t Sunderland. I hope we’re going to prepare properly and fight for them.”
First-half collapse proves decisive
The visitors took complete control in the opening 45 minutes, exposing Sunderland’s defensive weaknesses with ruthless efficiency.
Igor Jesus opened the scoring when his header deflected in off Trai Hume, before Chris Wood capitalised on a defensive error to double the lead. Morgan Gibbs-White added a third shortly after, and Jesus struck again before the break to make it 4-0 at half-time. Elliot Anderson later completed the scoring to seal a comprehensive victory.
By the interval, the match was effectively over, with Sunderland unable to recover or mount any meaningful response in the second half.
“We started the game too late”
Le Fée admitted Sunderland’s lack of urgency from the outset was a key factor in the defeat, especially compared to their recent fightback against Aston Villa.
“Really difficult,” he said. “We’ve got to play football. We can react quickly in one week, but now it’s too late to speak. We started the game too late. At half-time it’s finished. In this league, 4-0 down, you can’t expect something more.”
He contrasted the performance with Sunderland’s spirited effort at Villa Park, where they recovered from 3-1 down before eventually losing 4-3.
“The reaction at Villa was there,” he added. “But tonight we didn’t get it. That’s something really bad when you play at home. You cannot expect anything if you play like this.”
Forest’s intensity too much to handle
Le Fée also acknowledged Nottingham Forest’s motivation and sharpness, crediting their intensity as a major difference-maker.
“There was one team playing for their place in the Premier League,” he said. “They played good football and we felt the difference. Even if they are near the bottom, they can destroy you if you’re not ready.”
Forest’s victory strengthens their position in the Premier League table, while Sunderland are left to regroup quickly with a difficult run of fixtures ahead.
Tough run ahead for Sunderland
Régis Le Bris’ side now face a demanding schedule, starting with an away trip to Wolves before hosting Manchester United at the Stadium of Light. They then travel to Everton before finishing the season at home against Chelsea.
With morale shaken after such a heavy defeat, Sunderland will need an immediate response if they are to end the campaign on a positive note.
For Le Fée and his teammates, the message is clear: apologies are not enough — performance must follow.
