Everton FC are preparing to formally escalate their concerns to refereeing authorities following a disputed penalty incident in their narrow 2–1 loss to West Ham United in the Premier League.
The controversy centres on a late match moment when Everton appealed strongly for a penalty after a challenge inside the box involving West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes and Everton forward Thierno Barry. During the scramble, the ball appeared to strike Fernandes’ arm, prompting immediate protests from Everton players.
However, referee Stuart Attwell allowed play to continue, and following a VAR review, officials ruled there was no deliberate handball. As a result, no penalty was awarded.
Everton were left furious by the decision.
Club officials, including manager David Moyes, reportedly expressed strong disagreement with the interpretation of the incident. From Everton’s perspective, the contact directly disrupted a promising attacking opportunity and should have resulted in a spot-kick at a crucial stage of the match.
The situation was made even more frustrating as West Ham went on to score a late winner, sealing all three points and intensifying Everton’s belief that the decision had a decisive impact on the result.
In response, Everton are now considering lodging a formal complaint with the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), questioning both the specific call and what they view as inconsistent VAR application across the season.
Within the club, there is growing concern that repeated refereeing decisions are affecting results in tightly contested matches that could have major implications for their league position and broader season objectives.
The incident has also sparked wider debate among pundits and former referees. Some argue that the lack of clear intent justifies the decision not to award a penalty, while others believe modern handball interpretations should have led to a different outcome given the impact on play.
