Ipswich Town defender Ashley Young has confirmed he will bring his professional playing career to an end when the current season concludes, closing the curtain on more than two decades at the top level of football.
The 40-year-old joined Ipswich last summer and has made 15 appearances for the club, contributing both on the pitch and in the dressing room despite being currently sidelined with a hip injury. His influence has been particularly valued during a pivotal season in which the club are pushing for a return to the Premier League.
Young’s career spans an impressive list of clubs and achievements. Over the course of his journey, he has played more than 750 matches for sides including Watford, Aston Villa, Manchester United, Inter Milan, and Everton. During that time, he collected major honours such as the Premier League, FA Cup, and Europa League with Manchester United, as well as a Serie A title during his spell in Italy. On the international stage, he earned 39 caps for England after making his debut in 2007.
Reflecting on his decision, Young described his career as a dream realised over 23 years, expressing pride in everything he has achieved in the game. While acknowledging that he will soon take time to consider his next steps, he emphasised that his immediate focus remains firmly on helping Ipswich finish the season strongly and secure promotion.
Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna paid tribute to Young’s professionalism and impact, highlighting the consistency and leadership he has brought to the squad. Having previously worked with him at Manchester United, McKenna noted that Young’s standards and mentality have positively influenced the group throughout the campaign.
Club chairman Mark Ashton also praised the veteran defender, describing his long-standing career as remarkable and his presence within the squad as highly influential. He added that Young’s commitment to the team’s objectives has remained unwavering, even as he approaches the end of his playing days.
