Following a whirlwind return to the Premier League that has largely exceeded expectations, the Black Cats’ head coach is already mapping out the next phase of the club’s tactical journey—with one major caveat: defensive integrity is non-negotiable.
The importance of this foundation was laid bare in a sobering 5-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest last Friday, a match Le Bris acknowledged showed his side was “off the pace” against a ruthless opponent. However, the Frenchman is far from discouraged, viewing the season’s overall trajectory as a massive leap forward for the Wearside club.
The Balancing Act: Final-Third Patterns vs. Defensive Grit
As Sunderland prepares for a challenging trip to face Wolves at Molineux, Le Bris has been vocal about where his team must grow. While the ability to press high and manage possession has improved over the campaign, the lack of a “killer instinct” in the final third remains the primary hurdle.

For the head coach, mastering the “first contact” and winning “second balls” provides the platform for the counter-attacks and ball control he wants to see perfected.
Avoiding “Second-Season Syndrome”
With Premier League safety effectively secured, talk has naturally turned to the dreaded “second-season syndrome,” where newly-promoted teams struggle once their novelty wears off. Le Bris, however, is meeting that challenge with a proactive mindset, calling for improvements not just on the pitch, but across the entire organization.
”If you stay at the same level, you get finished really quickly,” he warned. “It’s clear in our mind that we have to improve our team… I have to improve my game model and the way I manage the team.”

The Black Cats’ current squad is brimming with “good potential,” but Le Bris admits they are “not mature enough” to maintain peak consistency at this level. His message to the fans and the hierarchy is one of patience and support, believing that if the young group is given time to develop their connections and patterns, the consistency will follow.
