Leeds United captain Ethan Ampadu has voiced frustration over what he describes as repeated gamesmanship and time-wasting tactics following their FA Cup exit to Chelsea at Wembley.
Daniel Farke’s side were eliminated after a narrow 1–0 defeat in a match that began brightly for Leeds. The Whites started with intensity, pressing high and disrupting Chelsea’s rhythm in the opening stages. Their best early chance fell to Brenden Aaronson, who failed to convert a clear opportunity, and Chelsea quickly punished the miss by scoring shortly after to take the lead.
Despite Leeds’ energetic approach, the first half ultimately proved decisive. The second half was heavily disrupted by stoppages, with Chelsea frequently slowing the tempo once they were in front.
One key moment that angered Leeds players involved Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sánchez, who went down requiring treatment, leading to a pause in play. However, he appeared fully fit shortly after. During the same stoppage, Chelsea players were seen receiving instructions from the touchline, further frustrating the Leeds camp.
Speaking after the match, Ampadu did not hold back in his assessment of the situation, suggesting such tactics have become a recurring issue in games involving Leeds.
He acknowledged the importance of respecting injuries but questioned the frequency and timing of stoppages.
He said that in his experience this season, similar incidents have often occurred when Leeds were gaining momentum, only for play to be disrupted and the rhythm of the match broken.
The Leeds skipper admitted there is currently no rule in place that directly prevents such behaviour, describing it as part of modern “gamesmanship” within football. However, he hinted that something should be done in the future to address it.
While Ampadu stopped short of making direct accusations, his comments reflect growing frustration within the Leeds camp about how certain matches have unfolded this season, particularly in high-pressure moments.
For Leeds, the defeat marks another disappointing Wembley trip, with supporters left frustrated by both the result and the way the game played out after they began on the front foot.
As the season continues, attention will now shift back to league action, where Daniel Farke’s side will hope to bounce back quickly from another painful cup exit.
