Sitting 15th and six points clear of danger, Daniel Farke’s side know that one more victory would all but guarantee their top-flight status for next season. That contrast in motivation already adds intrigue—but the appointment of the match referee has only intensified the spotlight.
Controversial referee back in focus
The Premier League has confirmed that Thomas Bramall will officiate the match, a decision that hasn’t gone down well with sections of the Leeds fanbase.
Bramall’s recent history with Leeds includes a contentious performance during their goalless draw with Crystal Palace. In that game, he dismissed defender Gabriel Gudmundsson for a second booking—though the delay in producing the red card raised eyebrows, with many believing the referee had momentarily forgotten the earlier caution.
Further controversy followed when he opted not to issue a second yellow card to Palace’s Brennan Johnson after a foul that appeared to halt a promising Leeds counterattack. The decisions sparked visible frustration, with Farke openly questioning the officiating afterward.
Mixed track record with Burnley
While Leeds supporters may feel uneasy, Burnley’s own experiences under Bramall have also been far from smooth.
He recently took charge of their defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion, where two Burnley goals were ruled out following tight VAR calls. Although those decisions weren’t directly his, they contributed to a sense of frustration around officiating outcomes.
Earlier in the season, Bramall oversaw Burnley’s 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest, as well as fixtures in previous campaigns—including a loss to Newcastle United and a draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Adding another layer to the controversy is the VAR appointment. Tim Wood will oversee video decisions, assisted by Jarred Gillett.
Wood himself has recently been involved in a debated decision, advising referee Darren England to overturn a goal during a match involving Sunderland and Nottingham Forest—a call that divided opinion among fans and pundits alike.
