Barcelona Step Up Move for Anthony Gordon as Newcastle Star Becomes Summer Transfer Priority

Barcelona have reportedly made a significant move in their pursuit of Newcastle United forward Anthony Gordon, with Spanish media giving widespread coverage to early summer transfer discussions involving the England international.

The Newcastle winger, who has enjoyed a standout season with 17 goals in all competitions, is now being heavily linked with a high-profile switch to the Camp Nou as Barcelona prepare for a major attacking rebuild.

Barcelona hold talks over Gordon move

According to reports in Spain, Barcelona sporting director Deco has already met with Gordon’s representatives—Will Salthouse and Adam Dugdale of Unique Sports Agency—in Barcelona to discuss a potential transfer.

Images of the meeting have intensified speculation that the Catalan club are seriously considering a move for the 23-year-old, who has rapidly developed into one of Newcastle’s most influential attacking players.

Barcelona are said to have been impressed by Gordon’s performances in their Champions League meetings this season, where his intensity, pressing, and direct running stood out.

Why Barcelona are targeting Gordon

Barcelona are actively planning for changes in their attacking department this summer. Robert Lewandowski, who turns 38 in August, is approaching the final stage of his career, and while a short-term stay remains possible, his minutes are expected to be carefully managed.

Meanwhile, Marcus Rashford’s loan spell is not expected to be made permanent, leaving Barcelona short of long-term wide attacking options.

There is also growing uncertainty around Raphinha, who has been linked with a lucrative move to Saudi Arabia.

In that context, Gordon has emerged as an ideal profile for Deco and Barcelona’s recruitment team.

The club reportedly view him as similar to Raphinha in terms of work rate and pressing intensity, while also offering explosive pace and the ability to stretch defences. His versatility—capable of playing on either wing or centrally—adds further appeal.

Competition from Europe’s elite

Barcelona are not alone in their interest. Bayern Munich are also strongly linked with Gordon, having already held meetings with his representatives earlier in the year.

However, Barcelona’s financial situation could complicate any deal, with the club still operating under strict spending constraints despite their renewed ambition in the transfer market.

Newcastle face growing uncertainty

For Newcastle United, Gordon’s rise has been one of the defining positives of their season. His consistency, creativity, and end product have made him one of their key attacking threats.

But with European giants now circling, keeping hold of him this summer could prove increasingly difficult.

As interest builds, Newcastle may soon face a major decision over one of their most valuable and in-form players heading into a crucial transfer window.
