RJ Barrett has made his intentions crystal clear after the Toronto Raptors’ playoff exit to the Cleveland Cavaliers, sending a strong message about where he wants his future to be.
Following a hard-fought Game 7 defeat in the first round of the 2026 NBA Playoffs, the Canada-born forward didn’t hide his emotions during exit interviews. While disappointment lingered from the series loss, Barrett used the moment to openly declare his desire to remain in Toronto for the long haul.
“I’m from here, who doesn’t want to play at home,” Barrett said. “Of course I’m trying to stay here. I understand the business, but I want to stay here. I have no problem saying that. I want to be here for the rest of my career, I don’t ever want to leave.”
It was a statement that carried weight, not just because of its emotional tone, but because of the timing. Barrett is entering the final year of his current contract, with extension talks on the horizon and unrestricted free agency looming after the 2026–27 season if no agreement is reached.
Despite the uncertainty, his commitment to Toronto appears unwavering.
“I’ve done my part on the court this year and I’ll continue to do my part,” he added. “Let’s hope things work out that way.”
Strong playoff performance despite Raptors’ exit
Barrett’s words come after a standout postseason run in which he established himself as one of Toronto’s most reliable offensive forces.
Across the series against Cleveland, he averaged 24.1 points, 7.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 1.3 steals per game, shooting 47.7% from the field and an impressive 38.6% from three-point range. He also delivered one of the defining moments of the Raptors’ playoff run, hitting a clutch game-winner in Game 6 that forced a decisive Game 7.
Even in defeat, Barrett’s consistency and shot-making were among the biggest positives for Toronto in a tightly contested series.
A key offseason decision looms
The Raptors now face a crucial decision regarding one of their core players. With Barrett openly expressing a long-term desire to stay, the front office must decide how aggressively to pursue an extension — and how it fits into the team’s broader direction alongside Scottie Barnes and the rest of the roster.
