Ipswich Town’s promotion celebrations have taken a dramatic turn after the Football Association opened an investigation into chief executive Mark Ashton following a video that appears to show him joining in a controversial chant during post-match festivities.
The footage, which circulated on social media after Ipswich sealed their return to the Premier League with victory over QPR, appears to show Ashton celebrating with supporters in Ipswich while participating in chants directed at Norwich City majority shareholder Delia Smith.
The video is believed to have been filmed during the club’s celebrations at Isaacs on the Quay pub and later on a waterfront terrace, where players and staff were seen joining jubilant fans.
FA probe underway
According to reports, the FA is now reviewing the incident to determine whether Ashton breached rule E3.1, which covers improper conduct and behaviour that could bring the game into disrepute.
The rule states that participants must avoid “abusive, insulting or improper behaviour,” and potential sanctions can include fines, suspensions, or mandatory education courses.
If multiple breaches within a club are identified within a 12-month period, the governing body can also consider action against the club itself, including financial penalties or points deductions.
An FA source has confirmed that Ashton is under investigation, though no formal charge has yet been announced.
Celebrations under scrutiny
The incident stems from Ipswich’s euphoric promotion celebrations following their successful Championship campaign, which saw them secure automatic promotion back to the Premier League at the first attempt.
As players and staff celebrated in the town centre, emotions ran high, with Ashton and club captain Dara O’Shea seen addressing supporters from a raised platform as chants echoed from the crowd below.
