The San Antonio Spurs could be faced with a difficult offseason decision as fresh trade speculation links Devin Vassell with a potential move to the Denver Nuggets.
While the Spurs remain fully focused on their playoff battle against the Minnesota Timberwolves, conversations are already beginning around how the franchise could reshape its roster this summer around rising superstar Victor Wembanyama.
One proposal gaining attention would see San Antonio send Vassell to Denver in exchange for Aaron Gordon and Zeke Nnaji.
Vassell has spent five seasons developing in San Antonio and is finally beginning to show the consistency many expected after signing his lucrative long-term contract. His shot creation, perimeter scoring and defensive versatility have made him an increasingly important piece for the Spurs.
However, with the team entering a new phase under Wembanyama’s leadership, the front office could consider bold moves if they believe it accelerates their path toward championship contention.
Aaron Gordon would immediately bring experience, physicality and playoff pedigree to the Spurs lineup. After thriving alongside Nikola Jokic in Denver, Gordon has built a reputation as one of the NBA’s most reliable two-way forwards, contributing through defense, rebounding and smart off-ball play.
Many believe his athleticism and defensive instincts could make him an ideal frontcourt partner for Wembanyama.
The inclusion of Zeke Nnaji in the proposed deal appears largely financial, with the young big man struggling to establish a consistent role in Denver’s rotation despite his defensive potential.
From San Antonio’s perspective, the move would represent a major gamble. Trading away a homegrown scorer like Vassell could prove unpopular among supporters, especially given his recent improvement and strong chemistry with the current core.
There is also growing belief within the organization that younger options like Carter Bryant could soon take on bigger responsibilities, reducing the urgency to make a dramatic move at power forward.
Meanwhile, Denver would need to decide whether sacrificing Gordon’s playoff-tested presence is worth adding another perimeter scorer to support Jokic offensively. While Vassell’s shooting and scoring ability are attractive, the Nuggets could hesitate to break up one of the key pieces behind their recent success.
At this stage, the trade remains purely speculative. But with both franchises expected to evaluate their rosters aggressively this offseason, the possibility of a blockbuster involving Vassell may not disappear anytime soon.
