Douglas Luiz Set for Juventus Return as Aston Villa Decline Permanent Deal

Brazilian midfielder Douglas Luiz is expected to return to Juventus FC this summer after Aston Villa FC reportedly decided against activating their option to sign him permanently.

The 28-year-old rejoined Villa on loan in January 2026 after a difficult spell in Italy and an underwhelming temporary move to Nottingham Forest F.C. earlier in the season. However, despite hopes of reigniting the form that once made him one of the Premier League’s standout midfielders, Villa are now expected to send him back to Turin at the end of the campaign.

Luiz originally left Villa Park for Juventus in a deal worth around €50 million in the summer of 2024, with the transfer heavily influenced by Villa’s need to comply with Premier League Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

Aston Villa Decide Against €25m-€35m Purchase

Reports across Italy and England suggest Aston Villa have chosen not to trigger the purchase clause included in Luiz’s loan agreement, believed to be worth approximately €25 million plus bonuses.

Although manager Unai Emery welcomed the midfielder back during Villa’s injury crisis in January, Luiz struggled to reclaim a guaranteed starting role in midfield. Competition from players such as Youri Tielemans, John McGinn and Boubacar Kamara limited his impact during the second half of the season.

Villa’s reluctance to commit to a permanent transfer appears to stem from both financial considerations and Luiz’s inconsistent performances since leaving England in 2024.

Juventus Open to Sale

Juventus are now reportedly prepared to move the Brazilian on permanently this summer, with his valuation dropping significantly from the €50m fee they paid less than two years ago. According to multiple reports, the Serie A giants could accept offers in the region of €25m.

The Italian club are also believed to be open to loan proposals, but only under strict conditions — including full wage coverage and an obligation-to-buy clause.

Luiz’s time in Turin has failed to meet expectations. Injuries, inconsistent form and tactical adjustments under Juventus managers have prevented him from establishing himself as a key figure in midfield. His loan spell at Nottingham Forest earlier this season also failed to revive his momentum before Villa brought him back in January.

Premier League Interest Growing Again

Despite his recent struggles, Douglas Luiz remains a highly respected midfielder in England due to his performances during his first spell at Aston Villa, where he developed into one of the Premier League’s most complete central midfielders.

There is believed to be concrete interest from several Premier League clubs ahead of the summer transfer window, while teams in Saudi Arabia and Brazil are also monitoring his situation closely.

Given his age, Premier League experience and reduced asking price, Luiz could emerge as one of the more attractive midfield opportunities available this summer.

What Happens Next?

Juventus now face a crucial decision regarding the Brazilian international’s future. With the club aiming to reshape its squad ahead of next season, Luiz appears increasingly likely to become one of the high-profile departures of the summer window.

A return to the Premier League currently looks like the most realistic outcome, especially considering Luiz’s strongest football has come in England. Saudi Pro League clubs could also test Juventus’ resolve with lucrative offers, while a return to Brazil cannot yet be ruled out.

For now, though, Douglas Luiz’s Aston Villa reunion appears set to end after just a few months — and another major transfer saga may soon begin.
