Leeds United are edging closer to sanctioning the departure of Wilfried Gnonto, with the winger now expected to leave Elland Road in the upcoming summer transfer window after falling down the pecking order under Daniel Farke.
The Whites have already secured Premier League safety for next season, allowing attention to shift towards squad planning ahead of the 2026/27 campaign. While wholesale changes are not expected, Leeds are preparing for a busy summer of both arrivals and exits as they look to strengthen key areas of the squad.
Gnonto, however, appears firmly on the list of potential departures.
Gnonto set for Elland Road exit
The Italian winger has endured a frustrating campaign, often restricted to substitute appearances following tactical adjustments made by Farke. As Leeds settled into a more consistent system, Gnonto’s opportunities became increasingly limited, with the manager favouring other attacking options.
According to reports from Florian Plettenberg, discussions are now underway between Leeds and Bundesliga side SC Freiburg regarding a potential deal for the 21-year-old.
Freiburg have emerged as the most serious contenders for his signature, and talks have reportedly been ongoing for several weeks as both clubs attempt to find a suitable agreement ahead of the window.
Loan or permanent exit being considered
Leeds are open to multiple structures in negotiations, including a permanent transfer or an initial loan deal that would include an obligation to buy. The club’s priority is to ensure they secure appropriate value for a player still regarded as a high-potential asset despite his reduced role this season.
Gnonto’s long-term future at Elland Road already appeared uncertain after he lost his place in the starting XI earlier in the campaign, and the club now seem prepared to move on.
