Leeds United’s summer rebuild appears to be accelerating, and the arrival of Harry Wilson could trigger one of the club’s biggest squad changes yet.

The Welsh international is set to join Leeds on a free transfer after reaching an agreement with the club, although his contract with Fulham does not officially expire until next week. Despite the agreement, there is still a sense of urgency around the deal, with reports suggesting other clubs remain interested in hijacking the move before everything is finalized.

Leeds supporters have been waiting a long time for Wilson’s arrival. The Whites came close to signing the playmaker last summer, only for Fulham to pull the plug at the final moment. This time, however, the club appears determined to finally bring him to Elland Road.

And it’s easy to understand why.

Wilson enjoyed an impressive campaign last season, registering 11 goals and eight assists while proving he can play in several attacking positions. Whether operating on the right wing or in a central attacking role behind the striker, the 28-year-old offers creativity, experience and a genuine goal threat.

But his arrival could also have serious consequences for some current members of Daniel Farke’s squad.

The addition of Wilson, coupled with Leeds’ reported interest in other midfield targets, suggests that competition for places is about to intensify. And that could leave certain players fighting for their futures.

Two names, in particular, stand out.

Dan James and Wilfried Gnonto both endured frustrating campaigns last season. James struggled with injuries and was unable to consistently make an impact whenever Leeds needed him most. Gnonto, meanwhile, gradually slipped down the pecking order and failed to cement his place in the starting lineup.

With Wilson capable of playing in similar positions, Leeds may now have a difficult decision to make.

Gnonto could attract significant interest if the club decides to cash in. Having arrived for a relatively modest fee, any sale would represent a substantial profit and provide additional funds for further recruitment.

James also remains a potential departure candidate. The Welsh winger is still highly regarded by many supporters, but his wages and long-term contract could make him an attractive option if Leeds need to balance the books while continuing their summer spending.

The reality is that Wilson’s arrival should not be viewed as the final piece of the puzzle.

Leeds are still believed to be searching for more attacking reinforcements, particularly in wide areas. The club’s lack of cutting edge last season exposed the need for greater quality and depth, and the performances of Noah Okafor highlighted just how important dynamic attacking players can be.

As things stand, relying solely on James and Gnonto as backup options next season may not be enough for a team with ambitions of competing at the highest level.

Harry Wilson’s impending arrival could therefore be about much more than a new signing.

It may be the first domino to fall in a dramatic summer overhaul at Elland Road, with at least one high-profile departure now looking increasingly likely as Daniel Farke continues reshaping his squad for the challenges ahead.
