The summer clear-out at Elland Road has taken another dramatic turn. Following a major squad shake-up that saw several high-profile names left off the plane for the club’s pre-season training camp in the United States, central defender Max Wöber has officially severed ties with Leeds United.

The End of a Disappointing Chapter

Keeping a peripheral player with high wages on the books—especially one whose career has been repeatedly disrupted by serious injuries—made zero sense for a club actively trying to streamline its squad and build a cohesive unit for the upcoming campaign. Negotiating a mutual contract termination was deemed the cleanest, fastest way to clear space on the wage bill without dragging out an unwanted transfer saga.
Wöber becomes the latest high-profile departure from Elland Road this summer, following the exits of players like Pascal Struijk, Illan Meslier, and Karl Darlow.
A Fresh Start in Germany
For Wöber, the switch to the Veltins-Arena offers a welcome clean slate. Joining Schalke as a free agent gives the 31-time Austria international a golden opportunity to resurrect his career in a familiar environment, having already accumulated plenty of Bundesliga experience.
As Schalke prepares for life back in the German top flight under head coach Miron Muslić, sporting director Youri Mulder believes Wöber’s pedigree over 170 top-flight matches will add vital defensive stability.
