Rather than walking away encouraged by a clean sheet, McAvennie delivered a blistering, unfiltered verdict, labeling the performance “lazy” and warning supporters that the club could be facing a long, arduous campaign ahead.

”Got to be honest, that’s the worst West Ham team I’ve seen in many years,” McAvennie posted on X. “I know it’s pre-season, but no effort at all. Could be a long, hard season.”
When fans pointed out that West Ham’s pre-season conditioning is currently lagging a couple of weeks behind Rangers, McAvennie acknowledged the timing difference but flatly rejected excuses regarding work ethic. Drawing comparisons to legendary managers of the past, he noted that club icons like John Lyall and Billy Bonds would never have tolerated players strolling around the pitch.
”I understand what you’re saying, and to be honest, when I played we didn’t win all our pre-season games, but John Lyall and Billy Bonds demanded 100 percent. Everyone strolled about today, so it’s not for me,” he added.
Growing Anxiety Over Transfers and Nuno’s Strategy
McAvennie’s scathing review taps into a deeper wave of anxiety currently sweeping across the fanbase. With the gruelling 46-game Championship season kicking off in less than three weeks, supporters are increasingly frustrated by a stagnant transfer window that has yet to yield a single new permanent signing.
Nuno Espirito Santo has defended the club’s modest pre-season schedule and deliberate recruitment pace, insisting that minimizing games and travel is designed to keep the squad fresh for a grueling title charge. Alongside new head of recruitment Nils Koppen, the club hierarchy maintains that getting the precise profile of player through the door takes time and patience.
However, with only one final pre-season friendly remaining against German second-tier outfit 1. FC Magdeburg before competitive action gets underway against Portsmouth in the Carabao Cup first round, patience is wearing thin.
