The NBA offseason has played out like an absolute Hollywood blockbuster. From massive blockbuster trades involving elite superstars like Giannis Antetokounmpo and Jaylen Brown, to seismic free-agent decisions reshaping the league, drama has been in no short supply. Most notably, LeBron James joining Jaylen Brown in Philadelphia has triggered a massive snowball effect—leading many hopeful fans to speculate whether Stephen Curry could soon ask out of Golden State.
With the Warriors’ roster facing severe limitations, minimal flexibility, and a dry free-agent pool following failed pursuits, rumors have begun to swirl around Curry’s long-term future. Naturally, Toronto Raptors fans are salivating at the prospect of landing a true, elite point guard—something the franchise hasn’t fully enjoyed since the iconic days of Kyle Lowry. While Immanuel Quickley remains a talented piece, his persistent health battles and inconsistent performances have supporters begging for a permanent, superstar solution at the guard spot.
However, Raptors fans desperately need a massive reality check: Steph Curry is not walking through that door.
Why a Trade for Curry is Completely Unrealistic
There are several glaring reasons why a trade for the legendary sharp-shooter is nothing more than a pipe dream, starting with asset value.
Even at 38 years old, Curry remains an absolute offensive titan. Last season, he averaged a staggering 26.6 points per game while shooting an elite 39.3 percent from beyond the arc on 11.3 attempts per night. He is definitively still a top-five point guard in the entire NBA and arguably the greatest shooter in basketball history. Furthermore, as the undisputed greatest player to ever wear a Warriors jersey, trying to convince Golden State fans to trade him would require an astronomical, franchise-altering return.
The Raptors simply do not possess the type of asset pool required to win a bidding war if Curry were ever made available. While Toronto could theoretically put together a package featuring Ja’Kobe Walter, Collin Murray-Boyles, Immanuel Quickley, Jamal Shead, RJ Barrett, and a haul of draft picks, what would be left? A top-heavy roster consisting of Curry, Kawhi Leonard, Scottie Barnes, and G-League minimum contracts. That is a recipe for disaster rather than championship contention.
Focusing on Immediate Priorities in Toronto
While it is a fun narrative to imagine Curry donning the same Raptors uniform his father once did—especially considering his wife Ayesha is a Toronto native and Curry spent parts of his childhood in the city—the reality of the situation is starkly different.
There is an overwhelming probability that Curry finishes his storied career right where it started in San Francisco. More importantly, the Raptors have much larger, more pressing fires to put out this summer. Bobby Webster and the front office must first ensure that the pending Kawhi Leonard trade is successfully finalized before shifting focus elsewhere.
Whether Stephen Curry becomes available on the trade market or not, Toronto is currently in zero position to make a splashy play for another aging superstar. It’s time for Raptors fans to embrace reality and focus on the team’s immediate building blocks.
