However, one glaring omission left fans and analysts utterly baffled: the San Antonio Spurs. Given that San Antonio reached the NBA Finals last season and boasts generational phenom Victor Wembanyama—a player LeBron has repeatedly praised as an absolute transcendent talent—the decision to completely look past the Spurs shocked the basketball community.
Why the Spurs Were Left Off the List

“It’s similar to the Knicks, these are two teams that finished [at the top of the conference]. Spurs were the runner-up. And when you have a guy like Wemby, you have to respect his growth, his position on the Spurs. It’s not easy; LeBron James shows up, it just doesn’t matter who you are,” Paul explained.
Protecting Wembanyama’s Ecosystem
Paul’s rationale makes complete basketball sense. At just 22 years old, Wembanyama is already the reigning Defensive Player of the Year and the undisputed focal point of a franchise fresh off a Finals appearance. Dropping an aging, ball-dominant superstar like LeBron into the ecosystem risks disrupting team chemistry, stifling the young center’s development, and taking the ball out of the hands of the player driving San Antonio’s success.
It was never a matter of LeBron lacking respect for the organization or Wembanyama—who has openly studied James as one of the smartest minds in the game. Rather, it was a conscious decision to avoid stepping on the toes of a young superstar whose trajectory is already soaring sky-high. Ultimately, LeBron chose a different path in Philadelphia, leaving the Spurs to continue building around their formidable French centerpiece undisturbed.
