Aston Villa’s pursuit of Everton midfielder James Garner has hit a massive roadblock. According to former Everton and Villa chief executive Keith Wyness, the Toffees are sitting in an impregnable negotiating position and will easily price Unai Emery’s side out of a deal during the current summer transfer window.
While the Villans have been long-term admirers of the former Manchester United youngster—monitoring his situation closely since January and offering the enticing prospect of Champions League football—financial restrictions and a long-term contract make a move nearly impossible this summer.
Everton Hold All the Cards
Speaking exclusively on Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness explained that Everton’s boardroom holds absolute leverage over any potential suitors. Garner put pen to paper on a lucrative new deal that ties him down at the Hill Dickinson Stadium until the summer of 2030, giving the Merseyside club four full years of security.
“Everton can price Villa out of this quite easily. I think there’s four years left now on Garner’s contract, so they’re in a very strong position,” Wyness stated bluntly.
Furthermore, Villa’s maneuvering in the transfer market is heavily restricted by strict financial regulations. While Unai Emery boasts a competitive squad, the club’s complex financial engineering and already-allocated budgets mean they lack the breathing room required to match a prohibitive valuation.
No Desire to Agitate for an Exit
Compounding Villa’s frustrations is the player’s own stance. Fresh off the back of a stellar campaign that saw him break into the senior England setup and establish himself as a consistent Premier League performer, Garner is reportedly content on Merseyside.
Wyness insists that neither Garner nor his representatives will rock the boat or force a move this summer. Instead, the midfielder is looking for assurances from David Moyes regarding new arrivals to bolster the squad.
“I don’t think Garner’s people will be agitating for a move. I think he’d like to see probably some more players coming into Everton, and you’d hope David Moyes will be able to reassure him on that as well,” Wyness added. “But certainly I don’t think this is one that would work for Villa at all. Everton have got all the cards in this one, and I think he’ll be staying at Everton.”
Destined for Record-Breaking Valuations
Although a summer departure is off the cards, Garner’s trajectory suggests he is destined for absolute superstardom. Former Everton scout Bryan King recently tipped the 25-year-old to eventually shatter the club’s all-time record sale—surpassing Romelu Lukaku’s historic £75 million move to Manchester United.
For now, however, Everton fans can breathe a massive sigh of relief. Despite Aston Villa’s strong admiration and Unai Emery’s tactical desire to add the Englishman to his midfield ranks, economic realities and a long-term contract mean James Garner will remain a cornerstone of Everton’s project as the new season approaches.
