While much of the attention has centered on the team’s pursuit of another championship, the organization must now determine whether RJ Barrett remains a central piece of those ambitions or whether his value on the trade market is simply too good to ignore.

Barrett enters the 2026-27 campaign in the final year of his current contract, putting Toronto in a difficult position. After producing one of the strongest stretches of basketball in his career—particularly during the playoffs—the Canadian forward has positioned himself for a significant payday.

His postseason performances turned plenty of heads. Barrett averaged more than 24 points per game, shot efficiently from beyond the arc, and delivered several clutch moments, including a memorable game-winning basket. Those displays have strengthened his case for a lucrative extension and reminded everyone why Toronto originally believed he could become one of the franchise’s cornerstone players.

However, rewarding Barrett with a new contract is not as straightforward as it may seem.

The Raptors have already committed major money to Jakob Poeltl and Immanuel Quickley, while Kawhi Leonard is also expected to receive another contract if negotiations are completed. With Scottie Barnes already established as the franchise centerpiece, Toronto’s salary structure is becoming increasingly crowded.

That raises an important question: can the Raptors realistically commit another massive contract to Barrett without limiting their future flexibility?

Many around the league believe Barrett’s camp will understandably seek a salary above Quickley’s annual figure after his breakout campaign. From the player’s perspective, his recent performances justify that demand. From the team’s perspective, though, committing that kind of money carries considerable risk.

While Barrett thrived during the playoffs, some observers believe his production was boosted by unique circumstances. Injuries elsewhere in the rotation expanded his offensive responsibilities, allowing him to become one of Toronto’s primary scoring options.

Whether he can consistently produce at that level alongside Leonard and Barnes remains uncertain.

If those stars remain healthy, Barrett will likely return to more of a complementary role rather than serving as the focal point of the offense. That role requires efficient perimeter shooting and consistent off-ball production—areas where he has shown flashes but not complete consistency throughout his NBA career.

His overall three-point shooting numbers with Toronto remain respectable rather than elite, leaving questions about whether he can maximize his impact without dominating the basketball.

Those concerns make this decision especially complicated.

Extending Barrett now could secure an important long-term contributor before his value rises even further. On the other hand, it could also leave Toronto carrying another expensive contract if his production levels off.

Waiting may ultimately provide the Raptors with the clearest picture.

Allowing Barrett to begin next season without an immediate extension would give the organization more time to evaluate how he fits alongside Leonard, Barnes, Quickley and the rest of the core. It would also allow Toronto to monitor the trade market should another franchise present an offer that better aligns with the Raptors’ long-term vision.

The front office therefore finds itself balancing immediate success against future flexibility.

Barrett has undoubtedly earned another opportunity to prove he belongs among the franchise’s long-term building blocks. Yet the Raptors also cannot afford to make an emotional decision simply because he is coming off the best stretch of basketball of his career.

With championship expectations growing and payroll concerns becoming increasingly significant, Toronto’s next move regarding Barrett may prove just as important as any blockbuster trade or marquee signing they make this offseason.

Whether that future includes a lucrative extension or a surprising trade, one thing is becoming increasingly clear—the Raptors are approaching one of the defining decisions of their current era, and the outcome could influence the franchise for years to come.
