The San Antonio Spurs have spent the past two seasons building one of the NBA’s brightest young cores around Victor Wembanyama. With the French superstar already looking like a future MVP, the franchise appears to be entering win-now territory much sooner than many expected. Now, a blockbuster trade proposal has sparked debate across the NBA after suggesting the Spurs should make an aggressive move for Phoenix Suns superstar Devin Booker.
Although there is no indication that negotiations are taking place between the two franchises, the hypothetical proposal has generated enormous discussion because of what it could mean for both organizations.
Under the suggested deal, San Antonio would receive Booker, while Phoenix would land De’Aaron Fox along with a massive haul of future draft assets, including multiple first-round selections and a future pick swap. It would represent one of the biggest trades in recent NBA history if it ever became reality.
For the Spurs, the attraction is obvious.
Booker has developed into one of the league’s most complete offensive players. Capable of scoring from all three levels while also creating opportunities for teammates, he would immediately become the perfect offensive partner for Wembanyama.
Unlike some ball-dominant guards, Booker has repeatedly shown that he can thrive both on and off the basketball. That versatility could allow San Antonio’s exciting young backcourt, including Stephon Castle and rookie Dylan Harper, to continue developing without sacrificing touches or disrupting the team’s long-term vision.
Adding Booker would also give the Spurs one of the NBA’s most dangerous starting lineups.
A core featuring Booker, Wembanyama, Castle and Harper would combine elite scoring, athleticism, defensive potential and long-term upside. It would instantly place San Antonio among the Western Conference contenders while giving Wembanyama another proven All-Star entering his prime.
Booker remains one of the NBA’s elite scorers after averaging more than 26 points and six assists last season. At under 30 years old, he still has several peak seasons ahead, making him an attractive target for any championship contender.
However, acquiring a player of Booker’s caliber would come at a significant cost.
The proposed package asks San Antonio to part ways with De’Aaron Fox alongside valuable draft picks stretching several years into the future. Fox remains one of the league’s fastest and most explosive guards, and losing him would undoubtedly leave a major gap in the Spurs’ backcourt.
The draft compensation could also prove costly if injuries or unexpected struggles affect the franchise in future seasons.
From Phoenix’s perspective, the proposal offers a different kind of appeal.
Rather than beginning a complete rebuild, the Suns would receive an established All-Star point guard capable of leading the offense immediately while dramatically improving their collection of future draft assets.
Those extra selections could provide flexibility for future trades or allow Phoenix to accelerate a roster reset if the organization eventually decides to build around younger talent.
Still, there remains one major obstacle.
There has been no credible indication that the Suns are actively shopping Booker. The franchise has consistently viewed him as the face of the organization, making any potential trade extremely difficult unless Phoenix dramatically changes direction.
Likewise, San Antonio would need to determine whether sacrificing Fox and several premium draft picks is worth the opportunity to pair Booker with Wembanyama.
Even though this remains only a speculative proposal, it highlights how quickly expectations have changed for the Spurs. After years of rebuilding, the conversation is no longer about collecting young talent—it is about surrounding Wembanyama with championship-level players.
Whether or not Booker ever wears a Spurs jersey, one thing is becoming increasingly clear: San Antonio’s front office now has the assets and ambition to pursue blockbuster moves whenever the right opportunity presents itself. If a superstar truly becomes available, the Spurs are expected to be among the first teams ready to make a franchise-altering offer.
