Forest Given Green Light to Pounce on AC Milan Outcast Fofana But Palace Are Closing In Fast

AC Milan’s new boss has just handed Nottingham Forest a golden opportunity. The question is whether they can get it over the line before Crystal Palace beat them to it.

Nottingham Forest have been boosted in their pursuit of Youssouf Fofana after new AC Milan manager Ruben Amorim confirmed the midfielder is surplus to requirements at the San Siro, according to Football Insider.

Amorim’s Verdict Opens the Door

It’s a significant shift. Fofana made 88 appearances across two seasons at Milan since arriving from Monaco, and many expected him to be part of Amorim’s plans as the Portuguese boss begins life in Italy following his sacking by Manchester United in January. Instead, the opposite has happened — Amorim has left Fofana off his list entirely, with Milan now open to letting the 27-year-old leave with two years still left on his contract.

For Forest, that’s exactly the kind of opening they needed.

Why Forest Are Moving Now

Oliver Glasner has made midfield reinforcements a priority this summer after losing Elliot Anderson to Manchester City, and Fofana ticks the box as a like-for-like replacement. He’s a well-rounded, experienced operator — 25 caps for France, regular Champions League football with both Monaco and Milan, and a defensive record that includes strong tackle and recovery numbers from his time in Serie A.

Crucially, reports suggest Milan won’t demand a huge fee for him — with figures in the £15-20million range being floated. For a club like Forest looking to add proven Premier League-ready quality without breaking the bank, that’s a serious opportunity.

The Palace Threat Is Real

Forest aren’t the only ones circling, though. Crystal Palace have also identified Fofana as a target, needing midfield depth of their own following Daichi Kamada’s free departure and with Cheick Doucouré still working his way back from injury. Reports indicate Palace have already made contact, and with other European sides like Villarreal also reportedly tabling offers, the race for Fofana’s signature is heating up fast.

Sources close to the deal say Forest are “ready to pounce” — but so is the competition, and the next fortnight could decide where the France international ends up.

A Player With Plenty Still to Prove

Fofana’s numbers at Milan tell the story of a solid, if not spectacular, two years — three goals and a healthy assist tally in Serie A, plus a reputation as a reliable ball-winner in the middle of the park. There have been questions about his consistency, but his pedigree and big-game experience make him a name well capable of stepping straight into Premier League football.

Interestingly, Fofana previously turned down interest from clubs while at Monaco, saying at the time he wanted to stay somewhere that kept him in contention for the French national team. Whether a move to the City Ground fits that ambition could be a factor Forest need to address in talks.

What Happens Next

With Milan seemingly ready to sell and two Premier League clubs already engaged, this transfer saga looks set to move quickly. If Forest can convince Fofana that Nottingham is the right next step, they could land a genuine upgrade in central midfield for a fee that represents excellent value in today’s market.

Watch this space — the Fofana race could be decided within days, and Forest are determined not to let this one slip.
